Would anyone else appreciate a Hide Thread function based on a search word?
For example, you could hide all the threads in a given forum that contain the word "Brittany" in one step.

1. There should be a box next to each post
and you should be able to just click on every thread you want to hide, then scroll down to a box that says "hide threads", sort of like the "delete all checked" in your e-mail.

I would like this very much.

7. Well, you can HIDE THREAD based on the opening post.
But once you're in the thread, if it bugs you, you have to go back to the first post in the thread.

17. Yes you can, but the repetition can take a long time when we get all heated up
and hundreds of threads on the same topic pop up. Sometimes you can't hide them fast enough as the volume just overwhelms the one at a time method.

2. That sounds too hard to implement...
That would require indexing and searching each and every post (including the post). That would surely crash/overload the servers.

5. Not really, limit parameters to subject line and limit # of posts searched.
or current day posts.

14. Ok well you just changed the requirements...
Your original problem statement was to limit all posts containing the word Brittany. Now you say only search the subjects. That is more doable, but still a lot of database queries for every person anytime they refresh their browser.

16. Dude, I never set any requirements, it was just an idea to make it easier to
read what you are interested in without have to slog through the hundred-odd duplicate threads on the distraction du jour. Neither did I provide the pseudo code nor a feasibility study or data analysis.

18. Well I am a programmer...
When you posted your idea, I responded with why that would be hard to implement because it would really tax the servers having to query a database. You responded with something different.

This is not unlike trying to deal with a 'client' on what they want. ;)

Anyhow, I'm not trying to argue, just pointing out one aspect of the technical side of implementing something like you suggest.

21. I don't know what you program, but if your company has programmers dealing directly
with the clients you are always going to have lots of issues. I started as a programmer myself and became a client liaison for just this reason, we speak different languages and frequently programmers do not have the social experience to allow for the client's inexperience.

Of course now the position rarely exists (they let the sales weasels promise the clients what the programmers can't deliver) and few "programmers" know how to code anymore.

4. Yes, one word, one step which would hide all threads with that word.
That would make life easier. I wish I could hide entire forums because there are some I don't even want to see on my Latest Thread page.

6. Well, if you did that, you'd never see pics of adorable BRITTANY spaniels...

....but you'd still see thread after thread after thread about the talentless Miss BRITNEY Spears!

This video still cracks me up: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OSYerfTCciQ

She stinks so profoundly...!

Of course, if you say anything about her, you might get yelled at by THIS GUY: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWSjUe0FyxQ

9. Great idea. I thought of that before. A filter that would exclude everything with a particular
word in it. It would be a hell of a lot easier way to read DU, than to say just having the ability to hide a thread.

During times of heated discussion here, on a subject that I was totally burnt out on, I found myself hiding 30 or 40 threads at one time. I had to step away for a few days because it was overwhelming.

That being said however, I think that the software used here by DU is a pre-packaged deal, and that making a change like this would not at all be an easy one to make.

10. I'd like to control what forums show up in "LATEST"
While I'm ultimately interested in nearly all that defaults to that page, there are times when I may not wish to see every new thread on a forum-specific issue (especially when issue wars break out). As another example, though I highly value the contributions unhappycamper makes to veterans issues with his early morning blitz, when I'm in a hurry, I'd love to save those threads for later, more detailed reading and just see the more general content.

So, what I'd be very interested in seeing is a way to toggle what forums (and thus threads) are included on the "LATEST" page.

19. I have mentioned that several times here

It shouldn't be terrifically hard to create a script in Greasemonkey to do it, I just haven't figured out how yet. But I'm trying. :)
