Questions at Holder Hearing Focus Mainly on the Future, Not the Past

The Senate Judiciary Committee’s confirmation hearing for Attorney General-designate Eric H. Holder Jr. was largely free of combat Thursday, and even conservative Republicans talked as if his confirmation is assured.

“I look forward to working with you,” said Lindsey Graham , R-S.C., who later indicated he plans to vote for Holder absent any new revelations. Utah Republican Orrin G. Hatch also reiterated his previously announced intention to support Holder.

“My belief is that the president has a lot of latitude” in choosing an attorney general, Graham said.

Given the size of the Democratic majority in the Senate, the backing of Hatch and Graham means the only real questions remaining are when and by how many votes Holder will be confirmed.
