*Snicker* Leahy Is Brilliant
Edited on Fri Mar-23-07 09:01 AM by Beetwasher
I watched Leahy last night on Olberman, I gotta tell ya, he's a cagey muther'. He's COUNTING on the WH rejecting the subpoena's and he doesn't have to issue them now. There's no reason too. Leahy's got insiders, such as the fired USA's lined up FOR WEEKS to spill dirt after dirt after dirt on the admin. This is going to be death by a thousand cuts and it is going to be a BEAUTIFUL thing. And he wasn't the only one last night who indicated there is a LONG, EXTENSIVE list of things they have prepared for the coming weeks and these hearings. Other's indicated the same. The WH is about to get the most vicious beating we've seen in a long, long time. *Snicker*

3. He did sound very adamant that he would issue subpoenas. I tink that if the WH forcefully
and without a doubt rejects coming in voluntarily, Leahy is more likely to get public support for issuing subpoenas.

And doing it relatively fairly for a change. The Repubs are not happy about what Chimpy did either. You'll notice the complete dirth of support for Chimpy from the Repubs. There's a reason for that.

8. Yep. He knows what he's doing, that cagey old
prosecutor. Leahy was the SA for Vermont's largest county for 8 years. And I'm reminded of what he said to a Vermont crowd just after the election: someone asked him if President bush should be scared at the prospect of the dems taking over and Leahy assuming the chairmanship of the Judiciary Committee. He replied, "No"- and after a pause said: "HE SHOULD BE TERRIFIED".

God I love my senior Senator.

13. The only thing that worries me..
The longer he waits, the longer the madness continues... many soldiers are dying in Iraq everyday... even some DUers have begun to accept their daily deaths... personally I don't feel we should accept their deaths anymore! The only way to stop this war is to hold * and the rest of the criminals accountable for their crimes NOW! Not months from now, IMO. I know Leahy looks smart on this, but...

I don't see you complaining about other DUers saying, "Lock the bastards up NOW, NOT Months from now!" The crimes they have committed are so atrocious they should be led away in chains. I am just saying if we wait too long they will, YET AGAIN, slip away somehow. I am sickened by what is happening to Democracy. I am sorry if I get emotional sometimes. But that is my prerogative.

33. The Senate does not have the power to arrest Bush or anyone in the administration
They do have the power to hold hearings, investigate and gather the evidence. They do have power to decide the outcome of impeachment proceedings. When they are filed. And hopefully they won't do it frivolously. That means making sure they have a case and they have the support of the American people that forces enough Republican Senators to vote to remove Bush.

It doesn't do any good to yell lock them up now unless they are able to force it to happen.

We don't have US Attorneys at this point that would arrest or prosecute Bushwad.

Our country has lost its way. These are difficult times but we will weather this storm...together.
Believe in all that is GOOD in this country. Light will shine through this darkness.

When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love has always won. There have been tyrants and murderers, and for a time they may seem invincible, but in the end they always fall. Think of it- always.- M. Gandhi

20. Ever been involved in a court case?
We won't be able to hold dimwad and his buddies accountable until we go thru this process. It requires building the case so that it holds water. Even if there is enough to hold them accountable. We can't put something out there that later turns out to be false. That will hurt the case and make it difficult to prosecute. The case has to be built layer by layer.

From the gist of the interview Leahy expects to have the culprits hang themselves via the testimony of the career employees and jilted appointees. And if they do it right the public will trust the Republicans even less than they do now. If they do it right their normal big money contributors will dry up and they will have fewer candidates to run for elected office.

21. I think he and Schumer are playing the negotiation game
They are trying to signal clearly to the "other side" how strong their hand is. They want to make sure that the Bushies know they believe they will win. One likely consequence, if the Bushies are rational, is that they will back down from the ridiculous "deal" they offered and that the testimony will begin without subpoenas. They might throw the Bushies a little face saving device to get this done more quickly.

32. Essentially what happened in my view was..
Bush offered Miers and Rove up off the record because he wants to see what the Democrats have got. Once they know what the evidence is, they can cover their asses, much like they did with the Plame case.

The deal offered up also stipulated that they would not agree to an ensuing subpeona. The Repubs on the Judiciary Committee kept repeating over and over yesterday, why do we have to do this now, why not question them first and see if subpeonas are needed. Leahy and Schumer kept reminding them that wasn't part of the deal, and the Repubs kept weakly arguing that they could possibly convince the White House otherwise. Therein was the trap that the media kept referring to, and it was a weak one.

Bush would make it appear as if he was compromising, when essentially he was trying to dictate to the Democrats how this investigation would go. No dice. Leahy and company are too smart for that.

23. Specter is being an idiot making the suggestions that he made.
Too bad he isn't up for re-election in 2008 then maybe he might be a bit honest.

Of course, could remind him that in 2008 that even though he is not up for re-election there are 21 Republicans vs 12 Democrats. Does he want to risk being adversarial with the liklihood of at least another 2 years with Democratic control? On second thought, I don't think he will run for re-election in 2010. He will be 80 years old.

I haven't forgotten through any of this that Leahy was on of the anthrax targets. Leahy was the one that Cheney told to go fuck himself. Leahy is a very introspective and patient man. He's been waiting for this for a very long time, and he knows exactly what he's doing.

He was fucking brilliant yesterday. Loved the smackdowns on Specter, Hatch, and Sessions when they tried to argue that Bush was probably bluffing when he said it was the "final offer". Leahy kept repeating "why would the President mislead me?", and "I'm taking the President at his word." Did they not grasp the irony that they were telling Leahy the White House was probably lying, while also trying to convince him that they could be trusted?

Equally as offensive are the accusations that the Democrats are playing politics with this. I mean, exactly what the fuck is all of this about? The fucking Republicans have played politics with the American justice system. Beneath contempt, every single one of them.

I tell you, they are going down, and going down hard.

and prosecutors often have witnesses at hand who the targets aren't expecting. I think that was in response to Keith asking him if Schumer's comments didn't imply they had a few witness tricks up their sleeves.

And they'll keep digging and digging and find more and more dirt. Maybe they're going to build a huge list of offenses, and they're keeping their plans for impeachment secret so that maybe they won't have to do it and Bush will resign, but they know they're going to have to impeach him, because Cheney won't allow another president to get forced to resign. So, basically, they're dotting the Is and crossing the Ts, making sure that they don't lose when it comes to impeachment.
I hope that rambling bit of tripe just made sense. LOL

I sympathize with those who want this over now, the war, white house and everything, but we need to slow down and do this thing thoroughly. Most of the bastards involved have escaped from other quickly-investigated scandals (investigated quickly so america could 'get back to business and put it behind her, blablabla'...) to continue to do harm to this country. If we do not take down the entire machine this time, we will continue to repeat this cycle, with more stupid wars and more repression of americans. Take your time, Senator, and GET THEM ALL!

and he plans to let the incriminating evidence come out drip by drip, until everyone (public, media, and Congress) realizes the case has been made for impeachment. 21 puke senators are up for reelection - if the case is made for impeachment 10 or 12 of them may vote to convict to save their reelection bids.

Oh, talk about poetic justice! Way to go, Sen Leahy!

58. Leahy wasn't supposed to be around this long...
don't forget where the anthrax was headed... I wonder if he's pissed that the DoJ never even bothered to investigate who tried to kill him.

68. a little thing bothers me though...
you wrote : "Leahy's got insiders, such as the fired USA's lined up FOR WEEKS to spill dirt after dirt after dirt on the admin."

As I see it, "we" don't need to rely on "spilling dirt". Spilling dirt, spinning stories and the likes are the the right wingers' job and tactic.

It may be a minor detail but I think such rhetoric shades the matter that the facts actually are on "our" side ( as always ) and could make the story look like a Dem political point gain campaign when it's really not.

70. I don't agree.
Spilling dirt is quite different than spinning stories. And the OP said nothing about spinning storie. You did. The former is simply a common way of indicating that the dems will get the truth about bushco's corrupt Justice Department, the latter makes it seem like they're going to fabricate stuff.

72. wait a minute...
...I never said anybody here is fabricating stuff. I just wanted to indicate that spilling dirt and spinning belong in the same box of under-the-belt tactics that RW use. Hence, we shouldn't be talking about spilling about dirt at the WH when this is really about getting the truth out ( which it is, I thought my last sentence made that clear ).
That was my point.

That is a load of crap. Spilling dirt does not equal "spinning". Only YOU are spinning what "spilling dirt" means to try to make some far fetched point. Spilling dirt means they are exposing crimes and lies and you know it.

80. "Dirt" Doesn't = Lies or "Spinning Stories"
It means information about their crimes. Nice try though :eyes:

74. Excellent, it's the best hope because the supreme court would favour Bush and then a precedent ...
... would be set for a long time to outrageously not take an oath. Hopefully one day America reinstates a balanced court, for now Leahy is making the best move.

77. Wooo Hoo... my Senator! my Senator! The reps from VT... ROCK!!!
We have a history of being an amazing "little" state, with a BIG BIG heart.
I am soooo PROUD of Senator Leahy.
Every time I see him on camera, or hear his voice on VPR, I smile.
What a smart, classy guy.
AND... he's all mine (well, I share him with 625,000 other citizens of the fabulous VERMONT)

Gotta admit I feel the same way. Leahy, Sanders and Welch (who's a terrific guy, and will be a wonderful Rep), it's an embarassment of riches.
