A REPUBLICAN congressman from California is pressing for legislation which would force game producers to label packaging with tobacco-style health warnings.

Joe Baca thinks that games rated as suitable for kids aged 13 or over should carry additional warnings about the implications of playing addictive games for hours on end in a darkened basement.

In a statement, Baca said that, "Research continues to show a proven link between playing violent games and increased aggression in young people. American families deserve to know the truth about these potentially dangerous products".

Here are some of the labels we'd like to see:

The average age for a game buyer is 37. Many of us who grew up playing Pac-Man in the 80's never really quit. In fact, as of 2005, 75% of American "heads of household" reported playing video games at least occasionally.

Legislation like this simply reinforces the disconnect between the GOP and Average America. Video games aren't just for kids, and haven't been for a LOONG time.

Who's "research"? Focus on the Family? You know what makes kids aggressive and insolent? Crap like Nikelodian and Disney and any other television that teaches kids they have rights or are empowered. The problem is that children today think they have some kind of entitlement. I remember the good old days when your parents' friends were just as likely to backhand you for disrespect as your own parents were. You know what else makes kids act out aggressively? Lack of attention...usually from Mom and Dad both having to work extra hours or jobs just to get by and having no time to focus on their children. Video games are the samllest percentage of the problem, but I guess they're easier to demonize.
