Charles Krauthammer: Gonzales will have to pay for attorney firing fiasco

Alberto Gonzales has to go. I say this with no pleasure — he’s a decent and honorable man — and without the slightest expectation that his departure will blunt the Democratic assault on the Bush administration over the firing of eight U.S. attorneys. In fact, it will probably inflame their bloodlust, which is why the president might want to hang on to Gonzales at least through this crisis. That might be tactically wise. But in time, and the sooner the better, Gonzales must resign.

It’s not a question of probity, but of competence. Gonzales has allowed a scandal to be created where there was none. That is quite an achievement. He had a two-foot putt and he muffed it.

Even when Charles Krauthammer is right--Gonzales should resign--he's wrong. After saying that Gonzales and his aides gave false and misleading testimony to Congress, lied, and covered the White House's backside, he then calls it a phony scandal that Sen. Charles Schumer, is using to raise funds for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. Can't have it both ways, Chuck. Otherwise you've just said that a cabinet member should resign over a phony scandal.

And you have to appreciate Charles Krauthammer saying that Gonzales is an honorable man. Marcus Antonius said the same thing about Brutus, and Dante can tell you something about him. Read Shakespeare, Chuck.
