If you've tried to access Al Jazeera (English) and BBC World News and found them blocked in the US,
as I did, there is another way to get these channels via the internet. There is a free player that gives access to these channels, as well as others including Russia Today and France 24 (English), and several others.

It is called LiveStation -- http://www.livestation.com/

The software is available in Windows, Mac and Linux versions and works fine for me.

3. I had tried that with no success at getting the main feed.
It uses Real Player, and all I got was a "failed to connect" message with a option to get more information via the Real Player site. The Al Jazeera site did list LiveStation as an alternative. That got me the message that the site is blocked in certain areas. A similar message happened with BBC World, but I don't know what software delivers their video - the audio service worked, but the video feed led to the message that it was blocked for my (US) location.

but if others have a problem this alternative works fine for me. How about the BBC? Are you not blocked there either? (Link info in post #5)

5. I don't know why I get those messages.
Here are the links. If they work for others than it is just something about the way my computer is set up:

http://english.aljazeera.net/watch_now/
The BBC World News player is linked on the left menu and leads to the error message at
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/7459669.stm
which says "Cannot play media. Sorry, this media is not available in your territory."

8. Al Jazeera worked fine but BBC gave me this message
"Cannot play media. Sorry, this media is not available in your territory."

Media not available in our territory? I wonder what gives.

9. Full text of denial msg

Britain's most-watched news channel, delivering breaking news and analysis all day, every day.

The BBC News channel is available in the UK only. Don't forget, to watch TV online as it's being broadcast, you still need a TV Licence.

You can send comments and pictures to the BBC News channel by texting 61124 or emailing yourpics@bbc.co.uk

10. Whatever the reason these channels might be unavailable,
Edited on Tue Jan-13-09 03:49 AM by ConsAreLiars
like Al Jazeera (English) because my computer doesn't accept that specific RP format (although others like CSpan work), or because BBC World limits its video service, the LiveStation service offers a way to get them. Out of curiosity, I looked for Al Manar (a Hezbollah TV channel that a couple guys were jailed for offering via satellite in the US) and it was there. There are a few thousand channels, most of them in the "who cares?" category for most people (like cable or satellite TV, where the number is a few hundred).

For me it is a quick and easy way to get access to news media other than CNN and the other corporate media propaganda services.
