Poll question: Murderers should be placed in prison...
The option; "Both as punishment, and to protect the public.", was intentionally left out.

This is a punishment vs. protection poll, with a choice for anarchists.

1. I favor the "protection model" for the penal system
but incapacitation serves both "protection" and "retribution". I am anti death penalty because that does not provide general deterence for the public and life without parole would incapacitate (protect and provide specific deterence).

2. What about genuine efforts at reforming prisoners
through education and job training?

3. That is important.
I did not think of it because this poll was inspired by a hate crime debate on another thread. Rehabilitating bigots would be difficult, but a worthy endeavor in my opinion.

Some people believe that some criminals, such as pedophiles, can not be rehabilitated.

9. I believe that rehabilitating certain types of sex criminals is generally not possible.
I am in favor, therefore, of either indefinite imprisonment in a minimum-security institution, or in chemical or physical castration with a shorter sentence, with the option being provided to the offender.

4. yeah..I remember that...
rehabilitation...haven't heard about it in years. I guess the Private Prison Industry doesn't do that.

5. I think we have to start killing..
some of these people. Preferably when their young and first start exhibiting anti-social behavior and emotional instability. Perhaps we can take their parents out too. Generation Kill.

10. I can't make up my mind...
people love sending other people to prison, and I'd hate to take that joy away from them.

11. DeSade argued that you should never harm people as a punishment, including prisons,
you should only harm people for sadistic pleasure.

7. Both to prevent individual murderers from killing again, and for the deterrent effect
Edited on Mon Jan-12-09 11:36 PM by Occam Bandage
that imprisonment for crimes causes. Both fall under "protecting the public," I think. Pure punishment, I think, has nothing to do with it.

(Edit: I think rehabilitation is an important part of the equation too, but one that isn't quite covered by the OP)

8. To protect the public and rehabilitate the prisoner (if at all possible)
is the best answer for me.

Punishment is not a important concern other than how it may help the offender to make real changes.

15. Are you referring to the BART cop?
The one who shot the handcuffed man lying on the ground and being restrained by other officers?
