Budapest has Smog for the 1st time due to Russian gas turnoff

http://hisz.rsoe.hu/alertmap/index.php?smp=&lang=eng

Area: Hungary, Capital City, , Budapest

The Budapest Mayor's Office says it has issued its first-ever smog alert and is imposing restrictions on car traffic and a ban on burning leaves. The decision Sunday came because suspended dust in the air in Hungary's capital has exceeded the limit of 100 micrograms per cubic meter for two days in a row. The smog increase is being caused partly by power plants that were forced to switch from natural gas to more polluting fuels after gas shipments from Russia through Ukraine to Europe were suspended last week. The mayor's office says the smog alert will be reviewed daily.

1. I visited Budapest in the mid 80s
The smog was so bad, it stung my eyes. Not kidding. And there was a definite sulphuric taste to the air.

Budapest is a great city, but I barely saw it, thanks to my weeping peepers. It was the first time I had encountered pollution so bad that it had a physical effect on me.

3. To be fair to the Hungarians
they may have cleaned up their act since the fall of the USSR. I don't know that.

But the old Soviet system, yea, they were belching out all kinds of stuff into the air. IMO, it was a misguided attempt to keep up with the west. The same thing happened to Eastern Germany.
