Worldwide protests call for an end to Gaza conflict
Last Updated: Sun, 11 Jan 2009 12:32:00 +1100

Up to 20-thousand people have marched through central London to protest against Israel's ongoing offensive in the Gaza Strip.

Police in riot gear clashed with several hundred demonstrators near the Israeli embassy.

It was one of many protests across major world capitals.

Several thousand protesters in the United States descended on the White House in support of Palestinians in Gaza.

Demonstrators against the Israeli offensive also rallied in major cities in Canada and across Europe.

About 123,000 protesters marched through Paris and many other cities in France, home to Europe's largest Muslim population.

In Malaysia, police arrested 21 people including two opposition MPs for protesting against the Israeli military strikes.

Those arrested included opposition lawmakers Charles Santiago, Abdullah Sani and a local state assemblyman Nasir Hashim.
