1. Grats.
I never understood the point of installing beta OS, unless you're an app dev, testing compatibility.

But grats.

For corporate buyers. No one, and I mean no one is moving to Vista. It's dead from a business standpoint.

27. I dunno, the Ubuntu beta seems more stable than the production version
Running pre-production Microshaft warez is fairly pointless though, since it takes a couple "service packs" to reach the equivalent of a beta state anyway, so their pre-release software is like, not even at the gathering requirements stage; the only reason it doesn't fill up a 1 TB drive and 100 GB of RAM is it's not 2010 yet. But yeah, beta OS's can be alright when the features being tested are simply patches to the latest kernel/file system libraries/whatever, whereas monolith software companies tend to view public betas as a way to outsource QA, which frees up their programmers to add new untested features.

8. What's the platform you installed on?
I hear it's supposed to have been optimized to run better than Vista on the less powerful computers. Sounds more like a Vista service pack than a new OS.

Haven't tried it yet myself though I have an old dell I may sacrifice.

20. I beta tested Vista and am hesitant after all the time and hardware
changes I made during that beta. If you tested Vista, how does this compare?

One thing that concerns me is the fact that they are going to offer what has been a part of windows as "a la carte" meaning that you will buy a bare bones OS and add to it if you decide you want any native programs. Which might end up disappointing their expectations when people start loading Opera, firefox and any of the open source "media centers" ot there.

75. No. Using dos as a kernel was a "hack"
Windows 9x (95, 98, Me) essentially were not even OS in the true sense of the word.

It was more like the windows program running on a DOS OS.

It was hack left over from windows 3.11 where even if you "booted into windows" what was happening was
you booted into DOS and then windows.exe was executed.

Nobody will ever go back to that.
There is absolutely no reason.
It was a workaround to use existing DOS resources and it wasn't a very good one at that.

Took less than 30 seconds to boot up first time this morning. BTW XP Pro used about 4.3 GB of space, so this installation is about 4 times larger. Again, this is the "Ultimate" version, not Basic.

I am so thankful that I never have to go through the contortions you all do - migrated to MAC way back in the early 90s. It has -- blessedly -- been smooth sailing ever since.

I do hope Microsoft and the PC universe will get it together someday, for it is painful to read of the suffering you all go through...

69. The Matrix Runs on Windows....
http://www.collegehumor.com/video:1886349

:eyes:

I didn't buy Vista.. I have NO plans to buy another Windows OS for the forseeable future..

WHY?

XP does everything I need it to do and there are a wide number of open source (FREE) O/S's that are more efficient and more innovative: Fedora (Linux), Ubuntu, Open Sun (Solaris), FreeBSD.

Microsoft is at a crossroads.

It will NOT be able to continue charging its customers outrageous fees for O/S and office productivity software anymore because the market will no longer tolerate it and users are beginning to consider Linux and other alternatives.

The only way I would be interested in the NextGen Windows O/S is if it cost me less than $80 for the top level version of it. I REFUSE to pay $399 for it or even $199 for it.

The only reason I purchased Office 2007 in 2008 was out of necessity to be compatible with someone in the Democratic party with whom I was working on a major database project. I have NO plans to upgrade my Office again for the next 5 to 10 years either and would have been perfectly happy using my Office 2000 software from 8 years ago otherwise.

My objective in the next year is to set up a few harddrives for evaluating Ubuntu, Fedora, Open Sun and FreeBSD and decide which of these I'm switching to. (Apple's OS/X is largely based off of FreeBSD)
