Dixie Chicks Should Perform at the Inauguration Ball
Does anyone know if the Chicks have been invited to perform at Obama's Inauguration?

It would be a great thing and the Chicks deserve this.

6. Thank you.
While they deserved our support for standing up to the Shrub junta, such standing up doesn't change the fact they make my ears bleed every time I hear them.

for me, and I have to say it cracks me up that so many people love them.

12. Yeah, the whole risking death threats and their career to stand up against tyranny thing.
Why would people like them?

No, they're not my musical cup of tea, either, but within the genre they chose to work within and within their personal limitations they stood out, stretched their limits.

Having them show up at the inauguration wouldn't be about listening to them, anyway. It would be about them BEING THERE.

24. Going to another country to badmouth your leader isn't standing up against anything..
Edited on Fri Jan-09-09 02:53 PM by newtothegame
that's cowardice. What they did didn't take any guts; they made a statement in a venue where they knew everyone would cheer. Groups like Code Pink take the real risks every day, standing up against war and injustice not only in OUR COUNTRY, but IN OUR NATIONAL BUILDINGS WHERE THEY CAN BE ARRESTED AT ANY POINT FOR NOTHING.

edited for clarity

You're pitting Dixie Chicks against Code Pink? With a freeper talking point to boot?

For the record, I think the Dixie Chicks AND Code Pink should be invited to the inauguration.

they completely put their careers on the line to speak out against bush. they went from selling tens of millions of records to not being able to get radio stations to play their music. they did not back down.

38. Idiot freeper
It took courage to say anything at that time. It didn't matter where the hell you were.

Especially considering the corrupt companies ,who own the radio stations, who with help from bushco blacklisted the Dixie Chicks.

It just shows how un-American republicans truly are.

Natalie Maines attended and supported Obama fundraiser early on.

Their music is great and Natalie Maines is clearly one of the best female singers around today.

Nice right-wing talking point you have there, but we have an obligation to speak out against injustice and that obligation does not end when we travel overseas. Bush is a tyrant, and I am glad that the Dixie Chicks spoke out against him.

57. Get a clue. They didn't "make a statement" and they didn't want this
one of them said something onstage in passing. It wasn't some kind of statement or anything, it was a joke in passing that got blown up way out of proportion. Watch the movie Shut Up And Sing there is tape of what she said, after I saw it I thought the whole brouhaha was hilarious. Your claim that they travelled to another country to badmouth their leader is just total ignorance. Try learning what you are talking about before you go making a fool of yourself.
Oh and BTW in case you think I'm a big fan or something understand that I never liked them in the first place, they have a rep among roadies for being real Diva's on the road and I can't stand people who don't respect their crews.

You don't like it, you don't care for it, it's not your cup of tea -- but they don't suck. They are very talented musicians, songwriters, and singers.

I don't like either Annie Lennox or Springsteen at all, but I would never say they "suck," because they don't.

i'm sure the people who write dc's off as "suck" haven't listened to anything of theirs all the way through

martie maguire & emily robison are both quite good at what they do, even if you don't like their tunes

plus i think it's pretty cool that they didn't get destroyed by free republic - they have a pretty intelligent team around them

The entire inauguration should be toned down and never should have reached the level it has become.

Yes you can say this is some sort of historic event but so is the state of this economy an historic event of complete horror.

I doubt FDR would have allowed such an extreme gala in thoses times and we are in those times once again. Hell even when the mighty US attacked Iraq the movie awards toned it down saying it would not look good with all this horror to see expensive gowns and jewelery and red carpets while people suffered and died.

It was made a huge event when Obama accepted the nomination in Denver and now this.

It is also a shame tht only the privilaged people who are known have a voice in all of this.

Bash me all you desire but I think this is way over the top considering the timing .

I see tent cities and people more now than in resent memory or all races and many look like they just lost it all pushing shopping carts filled with tin cans and bottles just to buy food and I doubt they care one bit about this extreme gala and all the dinners balls. They very people who payed the politicians salery.

I don't blame Obama for the situation we are in but this is just too much. Once this grand event is over what then and what will it mean in the grand scheme of things other than a memeory in some future CD burned history of the 21st new american century. So much for every man is created equalor equal rights for everyone or even a collective humanitarian conscience.
