White House to get/or has gotten half a million dollars worth of new china

I am sure china breaks, given all the dinners they throw. And MSNBC was quick to point out that private donors were footing the bill, not taxpayers. And yes, I want us to use our best china and silverware when we entertain as a nation.

But with 2 weeks to go, what the hell are these Bush freaks thinking? And I believe they said they'd ordered from the now bankrupt Wedgewood china company. Why not just get replacement china made to match whatever they are currently using (I can go to replacments.com and order older pieces for my old stuff, none of this is rocket science). I can't tell if the china is already made and delivered, or that they will be getting it, because there was a question of whether the Obamas would allow this to stand, given our hard economic times.

Oh, and another snippet - the reason Obama and his family couldn't stay at the Blair House? John Howard was expected to be spending a single night there. One night. In a 70,000 sf, 35 bathroom, 13 guest room, hotel lobby gift shop and cook equipped state mansion. Just one guy, just one night, and a FORMER PM at that. In a mansion set up to take MULTIPLE guests.

I hate the Bushes, and marvel that they wonder why people hate them so much. We are suffering as a country, and not nearly as much as we will be by the end of fiscal 2009. And they order 500k worth of dishes. And give a slap in the face to the guy who is now charged with cleaning up the nest they've soiled for all of us.

There is no real point to this post other than I was just pissed off that we can't just give them a severance check like you would to a coach or ball player, and have them leave the White House early. How much more foolishness or damage can they do in the few days remaining? Probably lots more.

sh**ing on the country during their very very last days of holding everyone hostage to their empire. I think the Obama slap just tee'd me off because it was such a nice to the face, while twisting in a knife kind of move. They knew we'd all eventually find out why he and the family were being rebuffed, and they knew it would seem petty. Why choose to look so low-rent? This turd has a president for a father, didn't he learn even a tiny bit about how to treat someone? Well, maybe he did....

I guess it was just bad news for me to hear, after I'd just gotten done with looking at those unemployment numbers (693k jobs lost in December, and you know that ADP underestimates a bit), and seen the threads here on how impossible it is to find work, esp. for older americans who have hit the job loss lottery. And then I see old Laura smiling and a'smiling over her new china order for a place she is leaving. I know other administrations have ordered china, but don't they do it early in their admins, not on their last day? I hope the Obamas can cancel the order.

Also, if the Obama's were going to order some, I hope it would be from Lenox vs Wedgewood - isn't Lenox an American company? Wedgewood, I believe, is British and is grouped with Royal Doulton, etc. Lenox has either declared or is investigating bankruptcy also.

But I think it's entirely silly that they are ordering china when the Obamas, or at least Michelle, could pick out their own china.

19. Yeah, I knew that, which is why I mentioned in the post

that they could get "replacements made to match" from the company. I only mentioned replacements.com to point out that even ordinary people with ordinary china can find replacements, so our representatives who only have to call the company to have some made to order don't have any excuse not to. At least, I'd imagine that the company that made the china they are using would have the ability to fire up some new pieces for them from the pattern they established.

That is cool that that replacements.com is down the road from you - I knew of it because we had some very old china handed down from my dh's german mom. I believe she picked it up in Germany and brought it over as a war bride/ Only knew the name on the back which was Rosenthal, but not what pattern it was. We'd broken some pieces but I never imagined I'd figure out what pattern it was or find any pieces anymore.

Sure enough, after some time online, I found replacements.com, the exact pattern (was called Parisian Spring), and how many and what pieces they had for sale (which was surprisingly a lot). I never did buy them, but they send me an update to this day on what they have. It was kind of cool to figure it out so relatively easily.

The White House currently has 3 full services for large, formal dinners. They have the gold Clinton china commissioned for the 200th aniversary of the White House, the Johnson china with American wildflowers, and the scarlet Reagan china. THe Obamas may bring their own China for everyday use.

I am digusted that the Bushes are buying more china. I know that Michelle Obama would not buy additional china. If she did, the repubs and media would be all over her for wasting money during a recession. However, those same people wouldn't ever question Laura Bush's spending of half a million dollars on china.
