Pro-Prop. 8 group targets public-school curricula
http://www.metroactive.com/metro/01.07.09/fly-0901.html

If the vote to ban gay marriage in California did anything for the conservative Christian movement, it confirmed that they have just enough political clout to get by in a blue state. It clearly boosted San Jose's Values Advocacy Council, which worked hard to pass Prop. 8 in the November election.

The group isn't stopping there. The group's president, former San Jose Councilman–turned–conservative activist Larry Pegram, recently fired off an E-newsletter alerting folks of the group's 2009 agenda. The email read as follows: "There is discussion in the conservative Christian community about the possibility of sponsoring an initiative entitled the 'Children's Bill of Rights' which would do much to replace the secular, liberal teachings in our public schools with rights for children and parents to control the content of public school curriculum. More on this as it develops."

1. What would a real 'Children's Bill of Rights' be like ...
1. The right to not have to eat yucky vegetables.
2. The right to hit my stupid sister.
3. The right to stay up as late as I want.
4. The right to have recess all day at school.
5. The right to not have to kiss grandma because she smells.
6. The right to not have to clean my room or take out or any of those other stupid things.
7. The right to see the magazines Dad has under his bed.
8. The right to eat all the candy I want.
9. The right to not be nice to that goofy Ted Raines. He's a dork.
10. SPONGEBOB!!

2. These people are playing chess. They know they are most apt to lose the kids.

3. Another thing on my list of "reasons I would homeschool my kids"
Any Children's Bill of Rights would have to include the right to not be pulled from the only family a child has ever known just because the parents are of the same sex. And to not leave kids in foster care when there are people who want to adopt them, just because the prospective parents might be of the same sex. Ooooh so many more.

I hate to think how they would "control the content of public school curriculum" but I think it would be controlled in ways that would keep me from having my child in public school. And this is from a child of public school teachers and a strong supporter of public schools. But if my school district starts teaching how the flat earth society wants them to teach, my kids are out of there.

4. Oh, interesting. This is the first I'd heard of Larry Pegram.
Damn, I had no idea the fundies had gotten into my own backyard! Am I having an eyeopening month. People in the Bay Area (i.e. myself) need to know how to get ahead of this bullshit. I just looked him up...big time Yes on 8 advocate (helped to put it on the ballot) and ties to the ADF. Stuff like this makes me so pissed.
