Burlington Board of Health: "Remove Fluoride Immediately, It Is 'Poison' "
Burlington's Fluoride Fight

Burlington's Board of Health wants fluoride immediately removed from the city water supply, saying they are convinced the chemical poses a health threat.

Two years ago every major health and regulatory agency issued a joint statement reaffirming that the fluoride is a significant public health benefit because it dramatically reduces tooth decay by hardening enamel.

But don't tell that to Alan Sousie, the Chair of the Burlington Board of Health.

"We're fed information that tells us fluoride is good for teeth," Sousie says. "It's all we need to know. Well, the fact of the matter is that what we're putting in the water is poison."

Monday night Sousie and two other members of the board-- by a 3-to-2 vote-- passed a resolution requesting the city council to immediately remove the fluoride from the water supply. Sousie claims new research shows fluoride even in small amounts could pose a health threat to some vulnerable populations-- like infants and diabetics.

"How much risk do we have to have before we do something? I don't think any risk is permissible," Sousie says.

1. Sigh. Next they can pour some homeopathic fluoride into the water.
As long as science is being tossed out the window.

put into drinking water after World War 2 was that it allowed the United States to escape from a major flouride lawsuit by workers on the Manhattan Project. Some suspect that a side affect of flouride in the drinking water may be Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD).

8. Exactly.
Interesting fact, there. Yet people think you are going conspiracy theory on them if you question fluoride in the water system.

7. Actually, it probably is.
I'm quite wary of the practice myself. The "science" behind it preventing cavities is dubious, at best.

12. I've always thought having it in toothpaste is one thing, but in the water?
kind of like blowing out a candle with a firehose.

i use fluoridated toothpaste but my water comes from a well and I'm happy not to be filling my whole body with fluoride when the only target is my teeth.

10. Flouride saps and impurifies all of our precious bodily fluids
I thought everyone knew that.

General Ripper: Do you realize that in addition to fluoridating water, why, there are studies underway to fluoridate salt, flour, fruit juices, soup, sugar, milk, ice cream? Ice cream, Mandrake? Children's ice cream!...You know when fluoridation began?...1946. 1946, Mandrake. How does that coincide with your post-war Commie conspiracy, huh? It's incredibly obvious, isn't it? A foreign substance is introduced into our precious bodily fluids without the knowledge of the individual, and certainly without any choice. That's the way your hard-core Commie works. I first became aware of it, Mandrake, during the physical act of love...Yes, a profound sense of fatigue, a feeling of emptiness followed. Luckily I was able to interpret these feelings correctly. Loss of essence. I can assure you it has not recurred, Mandrake. Women...women sense my power, and they seek the life essence. I do not avoid women, Mandrake...but I do deny them my essence.

14. Who? The people who are concerned about fluoride in the water?
maybe you should do a little research before you call people morans. there is evidence on both sides and in my opinion the concerns are legit. does that make me a moran?

as much as possible, including a fairly recent account of Fluoride's rather shaky history as a byproduct of some other industrial process.

On the one hand, I grew up drinking fluoridated water and have managed to make it through four decades with only one cavity (that probably wasn't a cavity at all), filled unnecessarily, probably with mercury.

On the other hand, some of the people who oppose or question fluoridation have credibility, at least with me.

Same as Aspartame. In both cases, I decided to err on the side of caution and avoid them.
