Sympathy For the W?
In the end, a new portrait of Bush as tired, misunderstood, ruined
(By Mark Morford)
http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/g/a/2009/01/02/notes010209.DTL&nl=fix

You have to go deep. You have to scrape and dig and plow, hunt and dive and sigh and even then it might take so long and cost so much invaluable energy and ultimately prove to be so damn near impossible, you will wonder if it's even worth it and why the hell I am even trying because, well, sweet Jesus knows he doesn't deserve it in the first place.

But if you're so inclined, if the temperature of your temperament is just so, if that fourth glass of $10 recession-defying wine is making you feel unusually generous, maybe, just maybe you can muster a bit of sympathy for George W. Bush.

Possible? Insane? Blasphemous? Damn straight.

It's already happening. I've read a number of pieces and a few strange, sepia-toned articles of late (like this one) that, while certainly not daring to paint Bush with any sort of gushing, rose-colored, wasn't-he-an-unrecognized-genius brush of overt kindness, still attempt to give him a far larger dose of humanity and pathos than which might sit well with your very soul. ...

1. Nothing short of a long, excruciating death by pancreatic cancer...
would make me feel even the slightest bit sorry for that son of a bitch. Ever.

13. Pancreatic cancer deaths usually aren't that long, although they are excruciating.
I would not wish such things on my worst enemy, so I'll refrain even in his case. But I certainly hope he doesn't live out the rest of his life in comfort and ease, able to easily persuade himself that all the flattery foisted upon him by his sycophants is actually true.

Sadly, I think that battle is already being lost. He's rattling on all the time about how he still believes history will be kind to him.

Ah, I've come up with the appropriate punishment for him at last: May he live just long enough to know how unkindly history will treat him, and how bad a failure it will regard him to be. Let him not be able to die comforting himself that its view of him will be a good one in the end. Let him live long enough to see that the majority of historical experts regard his presidency as the worst one yet.

11. A quick death would be too good
for Dubya. Decades in jail would give him a chance to ponder the realities of the damage he did. Maybe his girls could visit him. "Oh daddy, look, here is your new grandson."

5. I would step over him if he lay in the street
and continue on my way. No sympathy - none whatsoever. May he become even more deranged, beginning 21 January, than he already is with just the slightest bit of comprehension remaining so that he can grasp what a true fuck-up he is and always has been. May he and his entire family slink away and live in shame for the rest of their lives.

9. Even the most pessimistic of liberals would Not have thought he could have done so much damage.
That the leader of the free world could encourage, and build into national policy, the routine torture of prisoners.

That the leader of the free world could have allowed flood victims to suffer for weeks before taking pathetic and useless action to help the citizens of his country.

That the leader of the free world could have started a useless, illegal war and then lost it in the occupation, all the while wasting billions of tax payer's dollars.

That the leader of the free world could have crumbled not only one nation's economy but the entire world economy in just 8 short years.

That he would be so horribly awful in so many horrible ways could never have been predicted.

The scope and magnitude of the destruction he has caused will be chronicled and studied for centuries to come.

There can be no pity for the devil.

12. Nowhere to fail up to.
Will have to live the rest of his life pretending not to know that he was the biggest failure in history.

Yeah, if pressed, I could perhaps muster a tiny bit of sympathy. Maybe.
