Anyone else listening to the DC vote debate?
Couldn't they make DC the 51st state?

1. not without a constitutional amendment
in fact, they can't give DC a vote in the House without a Constitutional Amendment. remember, the House is made up by representatives of the 'several states' DC is not a state.

2. One would think we could. It's really outrageous that D.C. citizens
have NO VOTE IN THIS COUNTRY! They pay taxes. They fight in our wars. They should have a freakin' RIGHT TO VOTE! Either they are exempt from paying taxes and fighting in wars or they get a damn vote!

3. They have the vote. They don't have legislative representation.

Personally, I think the capital should be moved to Wyoming and Wyoming be converted to a 'district' - since D.C. has a larger population.

8. not listening but I think DC should be made apart of Virginia or
Maryland and have their senators and one representative that votes
or if we make it a state by amendment that North and South Dakota be made one state since I like the nice 50 state thing, fifty-one is odd.

9. The people in D.C. are entitled to the same rights and representation everyone
else in America has. They are tax paying citizens, bound by the same laws as the rest of the country, yet they have no one to represent their interests. It's not fair, it's not right, and it needs to be changed.

14. Oh I agree...
And the whole repub talking point about following the Constitution is laughable considering how they have wiped their collective asses on it for the past few years... I always thought the idea of virtual representation is what got us into that nasty little revolution mess 200+ years ago...

I do wonder if the repubs would be causing such a stink if DC had a white majority

11. I am listening at work
I am slightly torn on this. A house rep yes. But I am not sure on 2 Senators for such a small area, relatively. I'm not sure if having the Capitol within the borders of a State is good or not, still pondering it all.

ANd what about Puerto Rico? Why aren't they a state?
