Today: Best Ever rendition of Nation Anthem at Wrigley Field's Winter Classic NHL game.
Hope someone puts it on youtube. It was sooo good and the crowd at Wrigley was really cheering. What a way to bring in this great New Year. Way to shine Chicago!

I guess the Chicago Blackhawks regular singer did it.
Here's a youtube of him doing it at a regular Blackhawk game

His name is Jim Cornelison

2. Best one I ever heard was performed by a mute mime
Anthems, and especially those written about war, don't much give me a hard on anymore.

8. It's becoming a tradition on New Year's. This is the second year the NHL has tried it.
Last year they had it at the Buffalo Bills stadium. I think something like 17,000 people turned out to watch hockey as it was originally played. It was such a hit they decided to make it an annual event.

11. third year i thought???
Edited on Thu Jan-01-09 08:12 PM by HPD
The first year was Edmonton vs. Montreal.

and last year i thought it was 70,000 people. I know it was definitely a lot more than any indoor arena could hold. 17,000 is arena size.

5. Yes. It was good. I miss Robert Merrill at Yankee Stadium.
Of course, he was a major opera singer.

He did not believe in singing the anthem 'with ornamentation'.

6. Seriously?
The guy was sharp all over the place, and then pretty much abandoned any key as he went on. I thought he was dreadful!

The guy doing the Canadian anthem, OTOH, had a lovely, full tone, and sounded terrific.

JMHO.

9. I was just about to delete the DVR, having skipped the anthem originally,
and seeing no reason to keep the awful game . I will go back and watch. I don't like the Star Spangled Banner as well as Oh, Canada in general.

12. This guy is NOT a good singer.
He's got too wide a vibrato, he's out of tune, he pushes way too hard. He has no dynamic range, because he is LOUD all the time. He should let the amplification system carry his voice, and not push any more than he needs to project properly into the mike.

He's dramatic, which is a crowd pleaser, but he overdoes it.

Sorry. I'd take Robert Merrill any day over this guy.

BTW: I had ten years of piano lessons, ten years of violin lessons, have played in numerous orchestras, have been in quite a few church choirs, and took two years of voice lessons (mostly opera) from a tenor who was a student of the great Eleanor Steber.

I sang soprano in the chorus of a community opera production of The Elixir of Love, in Italian, which was great fun.

I've gone to the opera in Houston for several decades and I can tell a good singer from a bad one.

13. I agree. He was mediocre, at best ... and that'd be too kind.
I enjoyed the fella who sang "Oh Canada" but he wasn't all that great either ... but he could at least cover the range.

14. I was at the game this afternoon.
Sitting in the bleachers in the middle of winter was certainly interesting.

The atmosphere really was amazing!

Definitely one of the coolest sporting events I have ever attended.
