PALM BEACH — Thieves did what alleged multibillion-dollar swindler Bernard Madoff likely won't - returned their plunder.
Calling themselves The Educators, the crooks who swiped a $10,000 statue from Madoff's island estate left it in a conspicuous place Wednesday near the Palm Beach Country Club where Madoff was a member.

The note said: 'Bernie the Swindler, Lesson: Return stolen property to rightful owners. Signed by -- The Educators.'
Hanging from the 4-foot-tall, 10-pound statue was a note.
"Bernie the Swindler, Lesson: Return Stolen Property to rightful owners. Signed by - The Educators," the note reads. Palm Beach police Capt. George Frick said the statue, which is of two lifeguards sitting on a raised stand, was probably dropped off about an hour before it was found at 10:15 a.m.
