NARCISSISM.

This is supposedly the memorial that Burris has already constructed for himself.

Hence, why he would be stupid enough to accept a tainted appointment from Blago.

Might be a photoshop. The name at the top looks a little suspicious.

If it isn't, then I think it is very, very telling.

And please don't flame me with stories about how your loved ones did burial planning to ease the burden on their families. I get that. I do not, however, understand the glaring hubris of this.

1. Looks like a cemetary with headstones to me.
Look at the names/dates on the two smaller sections on the bottom.

12. oops.. my mistake.. I misread it.....BUT
I have known of many family "arguments" over familial gravesites, and the lack of "space" for husbands/wives-of..

An acquaintance announced once that she had purchased several adjoining cemetery lots for the WHOLE family...which in her mind, included her children and their children..but no husbands allowed ..

Roland's children are named Roland II and Rolanda, and he's thoughtfully reserved subservient slots for them in his memorial. Like they only existed as extras in the grand epic of HIS life.

Jesus.

13. My Goodness, How Silly That People Take Shots At Someone For Accepting Their Eventual Mortality
Edited on Tue Dec-30-08 06:53 PM by Crisco
As well as embracing the natural impulse to want to leave something to be remembered by.

But then again, who could be surprised this is coming from an anonymous internet content provider, posting under someone else's more famous moniker - Wonkette.

Added:

My father's family has a plot. My great-grandfather, great-grandmother, both grandparents, father, an aunt, and a stillborn aunt all in one area, though we have no great mausoleum. Once upon a time, it was fashionable to plan for these things, rather than leave it to chance.

Edited on Tue Dec-30-08 07:17 PM by rvablue
That is why I put a caveat in the OP.

I don't think anyone on DU would take issue with doing some planning before you pass so as to lessen the burden on one's family.

This guy has constructed a freakin' monument to himself. With minor places for his kids....do they have slabs as big as his to inscribe all of their accomplishments?

19. I Just Can't Find It In Myself to Criticize Him For It
Even without the family plot aspect.

There are cultural reasons I won't go into, for fear of being completely misunderstood. But if you've ever been to an upscale arts or social event that drew a goodish number of African Americans, as well as Caucasians, you might have some idea.

21. I can say I've been to "upscale arts or social events" with all kinds of Americans
of every color, creed and background.

My whole adult life has been spent in very diverse neighborhoods in mid to large cities.

And I have no idea what you are talking about.

Burris is a fool to take the appointment from Blago, regardless of his own previous accomplishments. No other Senator will want to get within 20 feet of a political appointee of a Governor under investigation for trying to sell said seat.

I think the "monument" that he has constructed for himself might give some psychological insight into why he would even consider it.

15. stupid schmupid
I'd accept an appointment to the Senate too.
1) it's a huge honor to be a Senator, not very many people make it to that exclusive group
2) the state of Illinois should have two Senators ASAP
3) the Democratic Party and the Obama administration (and by extension the United States and the World if you think Obama's/Democratic policies are gonna be beneficial) benefit by having another Democratic Senator from Illinois.

the seat to highest bidder.

Don't know how you get rid of that stank?

And as far as your point #3 the Democratic Party (i.e. Democratic Senators) and President Elect Obama have both publicly declared that Blagojevich should not make the appointment and that Burris should not be seated if appointed by Blagojevich is appointed.

So, I guess you side with Blago and his selfish and arrogant wishes and not those of the Senate Democratic caucus and President Elect Obama.

20. Different cultures view death and it's rituals differently. I personally have left my
body to science but know it's best to respect each individual's views w/o condescending comments.

He is 71 -from a different generation. My parents certainly had different views from me and my husband. Let it go. :eyes:

22. I really don't see anything that weird about it.
Where I come from, it's not uncommon for a prominent family to have a mausoleum for their kin. The whole "Trail Blazer" thing may be a little weird, but if that's how he chooses to memorialize himself, why should I care? In his mind, and perhaps in reality as well, he really *is* a trailblazer.

Apart from ancient Egypt and Assyria. Nothing in African American culture says that is normal to construct a mausoleum for yourself with little side plots for your kids. For that alone he should get the seat.

If its not a Photoshop.
