3. Check this out
at www.michiganliberal.com. Some professor in Russia predicts the map will look like this. I think I'll stay right where I am in Michigan -- we'll have water, and how bad can it be to be part of Canada? Eh? The best part of this map is that Alaska, and Sarah Palin, will go back to Russia. Good riddance!

16. That just goes to show what a crackpot this person is
Colorado and Kansas under Canadian influence? Texas and Florida becoming part of Mexico? The entire "part of Mexico" portion probably has a much higher GDP than Mexico does. The way things are going in Mexico right now, with their complete inability to exert any semblance of control over drug cartels, I don't think they'd be willing or able to expand into new territory nor would anybody in their right mind jump on *that* ship at the moment.

And if this dude thinks that S.C., Kentucky and Tennessee and W.V. are going to join the EU, I've got some swampland in New Mexico to sell him. This dude hasn't got a clue, but I bet he gets a lot of props from Zhirinovsky for declaring that Alaska will be back in the Russian fold soon. What a joke.

32. Ridiculous prediction.
Accepting the premise that there is a break-up... the division of states and the affiliations listed are absurd! I can see Minnesota or Wisconsin going Canadian... but Kansas/Missourri and not Washington/Oregon? Get real. And if he think Russia would grab Alaska before the Canadians would he's out of his mind. The Alaskans and Canadians share language, culture, and the same freaking continent. How does he think Alaska ends up under Russian influence or control beyond wishful thinking?

I can see Hawaii going Japanese, but the NE coast going EU all the way down to Kentucky and Tennessee? Pull the other one.

I live in Missouri, and I can assure you it will not stay put as one state because culturally it's already about 5 states.

And far northern California wants nothing to do with southern California (which they define as San Francisco and south). I'm sure it's sim ilar in many states.

Autonomy never occurred to that professor, apparently. He has each new country just joining whatever sphere of influence is geographically closest, excluding the other US nations, for some reason.

I think that, if such a breakup were to occur, these new countries would be closely allied to one another. They'd form a kind of North American Union right off the bat, similar to the European Union. It might not even be official, but it'd be in everyone's economic interests to maintain close ties.

His state groupings make no sense at all, either. Utah being grouped with California? Uh-huh.

104. Best map I've seen
I definitely could go for being in the nation of breadbasket. I think Illinois is divided fairly close to how I would do it.....definitely keep Chicago out.
I would take the northern boundary up to the Hudson bay though. As the frost line continues to move north and thus the best crop growing conditions.....this would work for the long term. When the ice cap finally gave way year around we would have quick access to world markets through the northern pole.
I don't have a problem with KC being the capital but think Minneapolis would make more sense.

.

ECOTOPIA

Ecotopia
By Ernest Callenbach

written in 1975, so over 30 years ago

ANOTHER book available is Ecotopia Emerging written in 1981.

Now that I have read both previews - QUITE interesting by the way, I'm going to order the two books through our inter-library lending system, so if the books exist in Ontario's library system, I'll get them free of charge.

AND

I'll read the second book(Ecotopia Emerging) first, as it is actually a prequel to the the original Ecotopia book.

Amazing ideas I've read already, so the whole books will really be a treat!

45. We don't have to break up America. What we have to do is get the
neo-cons who have corrupted our country with treason and war crimes in prison and throw the key away. Then we can impeach or vote out of office all those Democrats who enabled them. There will be no further problems. We can then run this country as intended in our Constitution.

47. Not something I'm worrying about too much.
I suspect our worry will be more about an over-centralized police-state tyranny with the state and city enforcers fully integrated into a federal government overtly run out of the Pentagon.

53. Does that mean NJ will stay in NJ? Go to the shore...
The OB used to be nice. Then someone told NJ about it. Now it is over run with idiots. I believe the same people who live at the NJ "shore" hate these people too. Now we are stuck with them.

Seems like you guys move down here by the droves, and then bitch about how it is not like NJ. Thats the point.

If we wanted endless strip malls we would build them.

Open space and trees are nice.

(You'll have to follow the link.)

The big piece including Northeast and Midwest is still the United States of America. The circle is a nuclear no-go zone. Texas is of course an independent republic. Bits belong to Mexico. I think the southwest piece is under the rule of an all-powerful burger chain that requires its citizens to eat meat. Etc. Sadly I couldn't find a graphic with the names.

This is a lot more realistic than the Russian guy's idea!

No border issues, half the change in our pockets is Canadian money already, a common affinity for hockey, "pop" not "soda", and we've already got a heavy dose of the Canadian accent, eh?

AND WE WILL TOTALLY DOMINATE THE GREAT LAKES! No agua for the former United States! (Except for our sister Great Lakes states, who will be welcomed to join Canada as well)

Taking into account the logic behind happyslug's post on the other thread:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=103x411848#411976

There is historical precedence for the possibility of such a state:

My assumption is that their primary natural resources would be lumber and marijuana. That's just from my personal experience of living in Jackson County. :hippie:

i'll be happy. I think of the movie "V for Vendetta" The scene when the news is on "the former United States Of America" how perfect. It won't be long now. I live in the cultural region known as "Dixie." If the US falls apart like the Soviet Union or the Roman Empire, I'm getting my ass outta Dixie! I'd probably relocate to Miami; it's the closest.

Edited on Tue Dec-30-08 08:17 PM by roamer65
Canada would let these two regions into confederation immediately in order to dilute the influence of Quebec and to prevent Quebec separation from isolating the Atlantic provinces geographically.

Other American states will actually splinter. Ohio will split into northern and southern parts. I think New York would go with New England into Canada, along with Minnesota, Wisconsin and northern Illinois.

Quebec and Alberta will become problematic for Canada in event of a breakup of the USA. Our breakup will fuel separatist sentiments in both of these provinces.
