Breastfeeding Moms Protest Facebook
Breastfeeding Moms Protest Facebook

PALO ALTO, CA - Facebook, a well-known social networking site, was the target of a virtual "nurse-in" with more than 70,000 "lac-tivists" petitioning the site's removal of breastfeeding pictures from members' pages.

Facebook said some, but not all, pictures of the act of breastfeeding violated its terms of use. Facebook does not allow pictures showing a fully exposed breast.

The group protesting the removal of the pictures calls itself "Hey, Facebook, breastfeeding is not obscene! (Official petition to Facebook)".

On Facebook the group wrote:

"Recently, Facebook has started 'pulling a myspace' by not allowing people to post profile pictures of babies nursing. The pictures have been reported as 'obscene' and have been removed - their posters warned not to repost or fear being kicked off of Facebook.

Seriously. Nothing really stimulating about mothers breastfeeding infants...unless one is a complete freak.

21. Think that one's hot...check out this 15th Century
Maria Lactans painting:

It was a hugely popular subject for artists. Recently, the Vatican published something encouraging images of the lactating madonna to be produced again. It just shows to go you that folks are odd:

To handle pictures of breast feeding. There's nothing obscene about the pictures, but the reactions of the low-brow crowd are pretty disgusting.

5. It's not so important, but
Edited on Mon Dec-29-08 04:06 PM by MineralMan
FaceBook is a networking site, and breastfeeding is pretty important to women who are doing it. Since I can't imagine a less obscene thing than a baby taking nourishment in the way biology dictates, I imagine women who are networking with other new mothers might well be interested in posting photos of themselves and their children.

Sorta like the guys posting photos of the fish they catch or something.

FaceBook is being silly, and will make an about-face shortly on this issue, I have no doubt.

The stoopids will continue to post about breastfeeding belonging in the bathroom and complaining that masturbation is natural, too. And so it all continues...

6. I've had two kids, so I get it when it comes to networking with other new moms, etc.
What I don't get is the need for pictures of breastfeeding being so important. Post a pic of yourself with your new baby, fine. Why does it *have* to be a breastfeeding one? That's what I don't get.

8. I wouldn't do it, myself, if I were a woman, but...
who cares, really? It's a silly thing for Facebook to care about.

Do a Google image search for breastfeeding. 512,000 hits, roughly, and almost all of them show a woman breastfeeding her child.

Whether I would do it or not, or even if I consider it to be in poor taste, which I don't, what difference does it make? My concerns or approval is irrelevant, it seems to me.

I doubt seriously if folks are searching Facebook for photos of breastfeeding moms. They can just use Google and see all the titties they want, breastfeeding and otherwise, for pete's sake.

There are important issues and there is silliness. This one is silliness, IMO.

13. Depends who you are, I suppose...
Searching Google might disabuse you of the idea that there are not lots of folks who do want to see such things.

Eating is a natural act. Breastfeeding is a natural act. Taking a dump is a natural act. The first two are acceptable in polite society. The third is not, along with lots of others.

I used to, long ago, engage the wackos at Free Republic on this subject. Equating breastfeeding with things like making poo-poo and masturbation was their stock in trade on the subject.

Breastfeeding is fine. It cannot be considered obscene or objectionable except by obscene and objectionable persons, in my opinion. We're mammals, for goodness' sake. That's how we feed infants. Why on Earth would anyone be offended by it?

29. All or none...
Somehow, I'm leaning toward "none". Not feeling that adventurous to see all possible function pictures on the net, and I'm sure there are one or two I haven't seen yet... and those must be pretty darn disturbing because I've seen some really disgusting stuff... can't even describe it, but I'm sure they'll end up as cutaways for Maury, Jerry, or Cartman's show one day...

and that's fine - but I don't see the analogy to taking a picture of yourself breastfeeding and upload it to a social networking site that prohibits nudity. Why not just take a picture of you and your baby? jmho

12. One might argue one has to breast feed the baby in public
because of the baby's needs. What argument does one have for their photo while breast feeding having to be on the net? That doesn't affect the baby.

When you sign up for face book you agree to their terms of service.
Violating TOS now could be a crime.
So, I think that if you signed up and agreed to their TOS, you better follow it.

22. Yah, OK, then....
you betcha.

We wouldn't want to do anything to upset the status quo, now. Heck, wimmins had oughta quit whining about unequal pay at private biznesses, too, I think.

Think about what you're saying, please. Not everything that private businesses do are right, you see. I'd think that most progressives would understand that by now. Guess not.

16. I guess today's mothers aren't so concerned about equal pay,
maternity leave and time off for sick children as much as they are concerned about showing their milk engorged breasts on an internet social site.

So as they said in the 60s, let it all hang out.

24. It's not a zero-sum game, you see...
Why do you think those women are not also for equal pay, maternity leave, and the like? That's just not logical. They're probably for those things, too.

I can't ever breastfeed an infant, and yet I'm in favor of them taking such pictures and posting them on a networking website if that's what they want to do. Who cares?

And, for the folks who think that one should just blindly follow the rules at a private business, you might want to remember that private businesses once were why there wasn't equal pay, maternity leave, and the like. People pushing against such nonsense got it changed.

And so it goes with progressive stuff. First, you object, then you get lots of people to join you, and then the stupid stuff goes away. Amazing how that works, isn't it?

25. Perhaps. Maybe pictures of my friends
in the throws of passion or holding up bags of weed should delete them, but you never know, they've been there for years.

Or maybe this should be of no legal significance whatsoever.

26. I wonder if they've heard of "The Lactation of St. Bernard"?
The miracle that got Bernard canonized was the subject of many renaissance paintings, one of which hangs promimently in the Prado in Madrid. One of the highlights of my semester abroad.
