The oddness of the sale at old navy..
so my wife and I trolled through old navy, looking for a bargain with their 60% off signs blaring at every foot we walk.

so I scooped up a few things. a pair of pants $6.50, a nice shirt $9.80, etc. made out really well.

now mind you, these 60% off signs are EVERYWHERE in the store.

So now the better half sidles up to the register to claim here treasure and guess what? not a single thing she had was on sale. Odd, I thought.

The sales person said, "it's only on special marked items". okay, I said, "hang on one minute". I ran back to the "men's area" (it's so small I had to put it in quotes), every single item in that area was on sale. every one of them.

I go back to the register and state, "how come all the men's clothes are on sale but only "selected" women's clothes are on sale?"

by this point the manager had slink ed up, she chimed in, "well, (long pause), women shop more".

so there you have it. the crappy economy hasn't quite caught up with womans clothes.

I walked out with some nifty pants and a great shirt at an unbelievable price. My wife nothing.

I'm not promoting shopping per say, since I am a known tightwad, but I am always on the look out for a deal. But I did feel bad for my wife.

1. I was in old Navy too ~ didn't see many bargains
It was that way at Macy's and Penny's too.

Most of the "sale" stuff looked like it had been brought in from other storage places.

The colors of the garments didn't even look like they belonged there.

The shoppers were not cheerful at all and the lack of sales people was apparent --
sad

2. I have seen what you are describing for quite awhile now. I have a teenage
son and a teenage daughter. In nearly every store that sells clothing there is a huge difference in prices all the time, not just for items on sale. My son can buy nice jeans for under $15 and my daughter's jeans (same brand) are always much more, even though her jeans seem flimsier and made with less material. It's even the same story with socks and underwear.

This inherent male/female consumer unfairness always makes me mad.

3. Not my experience @ Old Navy
Edited on Mon Dec-29-08 03:46 PM by Debi
We bought gifts for several young women who work with my son - Hats/scarves/gloves - each only $5.00 marked down from $9.50 (I think)

I bought three sweaters that were $24.99 for $15.00
I bought three 'waffle' shirts for $6.00 each (they were $16.50)
I bought six long sleeve shirts for $5.00 each (they were $9.50)

I also bought my husband three 'waffle' shirts (but they were $10.00) and I bought him a sweater that was $29.50 for $10.00 (oh, and a pair of fleece gloves for $2.50 marked down from $7.50)

My sale prices were better than his.

Of course what the manager said did end up being correct - I did shop more.

On Edit:

the prices that I paid (other than for the sweaters) is what I would have paid at our local Good Will Store - which is where I've gone several times now for clothing.

4. My feeling is that most stores
will attempt to catch up with gift card sales at full price.

5. I saw Old Navy's ads for men's PJ bottoms at 50% off
on black Friday. So, I went and picked up a few pairs, when I got to the counter, the lady rang them up at full price $20/pair. I can get them for half that at Target. I told the sales clerk what the sign said but then she just stared at me like she was in a zombie movie. So I left it all on the counter.

That's the last time I go there. I've never cared for Old Navy stuff anyway.

7. I haven't been out doing any after-Christmas shopping this year
I haven't been to an Old Navy in probably 7-8 years. The closest store is at least 30 minutes away and I tend to do most of my shopping around my house. It's interesting about the price differences between the women's and men's clothing. I'm not surprised they do separate pricing though.
