Commentary: Sarah Palin understands small-town America

By Ruben Navarrette Jr.
Special to CNN

SAN DIEGO, California (CNN) -- During the presidential election, some Democrats demanded to know how I could defend Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

Simply put, Palin is my people. She's small-town folk who wound up in the big leagues.

Because I grew up in a small town with a population of less than 15,000 people, I was disgusted by the insults and condescension coming from those who think of themselves as the enlightened elite. Meanwhile, in small towns, I detected great affection for Palin. People talked about how she was "a real person" who "reflected their values."

The most significant divide in America isn't Red State vs. Blue State, it's rural vs. urban. The country mouse and the city mouse are still slugging it out.

1. I know there was one time I agreed with him...
Should've bookmarked it as there's about the other 50 articles I'd read where he comes across high, stoned, or perhaps needs to be high or stoned because he's a freakin' loon.

Puffy of face, paunchy of stomach.

What's up with that?

edit: I know it's shallow of me, but it's something that sticks out about these pricks. He's another round-faced git.

6. I come from a small town, too...
...of course, that doesn't mean I thought Palin had the depth to be President.

This is more embarassing to Ruben than to anyone else. His logic is so flawed - he could be bested by a 4th grader in any debate.

21. I came from a REALLY small town and Ruben is dead wrong.
I came from a small town in Massachusetts SO SMALL that we shared about half of our community assets and services with the neighboring town.

Palin would have been seen in MY small home town as exactly what she was / is...a crazed, self-absorbed opportunist.

10. she's pro privilege...
the entire 'divide' is between privilege and need. but few understand that. The rightwing of the National Assembly in Versailles was the landowners, the aristos, the church leadership and the established military in support of the king (all of whom were uniformly well dressed well fed and well educated) unlike the rabble which made up the leftwing of the Assembly. That was us, or our cultural forefathers(!) who often had to sell the oldest child into slavery in order to feed the younger ones. And palin etc would like to see that kinda thing restored (in fact, even the hardest reactionary today probably opposes such things as tithing, which saw military used to extort money from citizenry, including the wealthy/middle class, who, to say it plainly, would have hanged sarah palin and rush limbah etc, as recognisable enemies, even to them, much less to the poor and downtrodden)

14. Well, I lived in Sandpoint, Idaho where Sara Palin was born and I found
out that there were the Republicans with money who owned everything including the local government and the rest of the people, who were poor and exploited, but yet believed every line of BS fed to them by the ruling social and money class. Guess which social class Sara Palin belonged to?

17. Oh boo fucking hoo Ruben.
If you have an inferiority complex then get a therapist and work on it. Haven't we been through enough misery for 8 years because people inflicted their psychosocial issues on the rest of the country?

23. Palin is an embarrassment to us small town folks.
She simply encourages the elitist, classist stereotypes of us rural people as dumb hicks. Fuck that.
