Dodd Won’t Run in 2010

Maybe.

CQ Politics and others are reporting that Sen. Dodd’s staff sent a letter to the FEC saying that he is no longer a candidate for U.S. Senate in 2010.

This campaign, then, will be Chris Dodd’s swan song. Unless, of course, this is some sort of weird money dance.

"This letter helps set the stage for his Senate campaign committee, Friends of Chris Dodd, to declare it has excess funds and transfer the funds to his presidential campaign committee, Chris Dodd for President Inc. His Senate campaign committee reported $1,855,961 cash-on-hand as of 9/30. This amount will probably change with financial activity during the fourth quarter of 2006."

If indeed he’s out for 2010 (and I have to wonder if he is), there is going to be a massive scramble for his seat, and I presume Richard Blumenthal will be at the front of the line.

1. This is only so he can move senate campaign money to his presidental

campaign. He can declare later for 2010 and move unused money back to that campaign. It's something you have to do before you can move the money, nothing more.

3. Meaningless at this point

It's two election cycles from now and is probably being done to benefit his presidential campaign. I would not be the least surprised if he changes his mind in 2009.
