Anytime a public office allows someone to stand up and deliver any type of religious speech or prayer, there is the appearance of that belief being sanctioned by the State. Disregard the desire to be inclusive, because it just doesn't work.

As a church-going christian, I get this. There is NO REASON to have a prayer at the presidential inauguration, period. People of faith can pray for Mr. Obama on their own. It really is easier to just leave out the prayer. The United States will not fall into the ocean if this happens.

However, I am delighted that Yo-Yo Ma will be playing his cello for us. That's a religious experience in and of itself!

1. (shrug) There's no reason to have prayer ANYWHERE, but it just won't die.

3. Dapple, you just hit the nail right on the head!
After my previous post remained responseless, I am delighted to see that someone else sees the problem here.

1 - There is no reason to have a pastor of any specific denomination give any invocation or benediction at a presidential inauguration.
2 - The issue of gay marriage is a religious issue, and it has no place in the halls of government. Marriage (at City Hall) is a secular institution, and should be subject to strict constitutional guidelines and not to interference by religious dogma.

Churches are free to perform or not perform marriage ceremonies as they see fit.
There we go, problem solved!

So, instead of railing against the (poor, I admit) choice of Warren, let's remind everyone of the separation of Church and State, and its huge importance in the cure and prevention of fascism of any kind.

10. Are you recommending that the first piece of business
for the new Congress is to draw up articles of impeachement against the President.

11. I didn't say that. But it's about time that elected officials start obeying the Constitution
don't you think?

12. Your statement was that
"Obama was breaking the law and the Constitution". If so those are impeachable offenses. Congresse's biggest shortcoming in the last eight years was not acting on the current administrations breaking of the law and the Constitution. If you really believe that Obama is commiting high crimes, the legal remedy is impeachement. It is the responsibility of Congress and the Courts to ensure that "elected officials start obeying the Constitution.
The must exercise that responsibility.

13. I think almost all of Congress is committing a HUGE crime by not Impeaching *
who is the biggest criminal in the history of this country.

The Constitution is nothing but a piece of paper to most of them.

14. the best thing to do then is for Congress to suck it up an impeach
Obama for the crimes you have accused him of. Is that what you want.

16. Obama ran as a person whose adult background has always bonded religion with public life
Edited on Tue Dec-23-08 01:24 AM by Veganistan
This is who we elected.

Obama has NEVER been about separation between church and state.

If we want, as a nation to achieve the goal of separation of church and state, we will need to elect more than one president who campaigns on that idea and sets it forth as a goal.

17. Whoa ... and did Obama ask for feedback ... ?
Edited on Tue Dec-23-08 02:20 AM by defendandprotect
And would he have listened to criticism based on Separation of Church & State ..??

Obama has NEVER been about separation between church and state.

We elected a candidate of the Democratic Party expecting him to uphold

the ideals of the party ... which I trust we can still expect includes

Separation of Church & State and the Constitution--!!!???

Let me remind you Obama will take an oath to Preserve, Protect and Defend the

Constitution.

Obama's early assurances to religion that he will continue turning over

tax payers dollars to them was another huge negative sign of what might

be to come!
