Why do you expect the most sexually suppressed country in the world
Edited on Wed Mar-21-07 08:05 PM by live love laugh
to embrace homosexuality?

I believe that homosexuality is not a choice. I don't think many people who are gay would choose to be humiliated, laughed at and worse. I believe in tolerance.

The majority of Americans, IMHO, don't really hold any well thought out beliefs about homosexuality. They are truly ignorant. They really believe that they are being good religious people by shunning homosexuality. These same people also shun hetero sex--except as condoned by their religious beliefs. I have many ignorant friends, coworkers, etc.

When you put their ignorance in the context of the overall attitude about sex in this country, as one of the biggest taboos of all, it seems irrational to me to expect people who cannot accept hetero sex to embrace homosexuality--especially when not twenty years ago homosexuality was not even discussed.

Look at what happened to Bill Clinton for "normal" sex.

I guess what I am trying to say is change takes time. People who have won their rights in this country have fought for decades to get them. Look at the women's suffrage movement for example. I think the message of gay rights has to just keep being discussed but acceptance of a variation of one of this country's biggest taboos won't come easy or quickly. Still, much progress has been made.

1. You are right ...but I have to say that the attacks by the Neocon
Religious nuts and this adminsitration have been openly attacking the Gay Americans....they are so stupid that they have unwittingly pushed the rights of Gay Americans to the forefront by continuing to bash Gays.

Many states are protecting their citizens, and sadly many are not.

4. That's what I was thinking
I thought this post was going to be about a middle eastern country that stones openly gay people to death.

6. I don't know about "in the world", but for sure, the US is far more
sexually oppressed than any of the European Countries!

I remember when I worked for a cosmetic company, our COOsaid he was going to show us a really GREAT ad that was being run in England. He put the tape in the VCR and before he hit play, he turned to everyone and said "Now ladies, this is going to be a lot more risque' than anything you ever see on American TV. If you don't want to watch, I'll understand."

Imust admit, the colonialists in the US would have passed out if they had seen that ad on US TV! It WAS a great ad, but very suggestive. HA! It was the talk of the office for over a week! I should add, this was in SC! in the mid 90's.

I really wonder if the US will evershed the colonial veil.

7. Yep. The U.S. is the most sexually repressed
country in the world. NOT. Hyperbole completely destroyed any argument you may have had. Try again.

9. The progress is too slow for sure
and, it certainly seems even worse for those living through these times.

However, it took 90 years to end slavery, and then another 99 years until the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed, and we still have widespread discrimination in this country.

In 1992, the "Don't Ask Don't Tell" policy for the military was considered almost radical. Only 15 years later, there is a lot of support within the military for allowing gays to serve openly.

The conservative Republican president has said he supports civil unions, and the leading Republican candidate for president supports gay marriage. Could you imagine if Bill Clinton had come out in support of even civil unions in 1992?
