Madoff, Under House Arrest, Agrees to Security ‘to Prevent Harm or Flight’
By ALEX BERENSON

Under a new bail agreement, Bernard L. Madoff will be placed under 24-hour house arrest at his East Side apartment and will hire a team of security guards to watch his apartment building around the clock, federal prosecutors said on Friday.

The new restrictions on Mr. Madoff’s movements appear intended to protect as well as confine him. In a letter delivered by hand to Magistrate Judge Gabriel W. Gorenstein, prosecutors said the guards were necessary “to prevent harm or flight.”

Former prosecutors said that such language was unusual and could reflect threats received by Mr. Madoff, who has received widespread condemnation since his arrest last week in a $50 billion financial fraud. A front-page headline earlier this week in The New York Post referred to Mr. Madoff as “The Most Hated Man in NY.”

Mr. Madoff’s wife, Ruth, will pay for the guards, according to the new agreement. Prosecutors must approve the security firm that provides them.

And will someone kick the thread BELOW to the Greatest Page, this is important and I think it's getting buried because so much is happening this weekend:

4. Just remand the SOB...
and let him live in a cell until his trial. Either that or release every person convicted of a victimless crime.

6. Our ruling elite is getting increasingly careless about keeping up appearances.
It's every billionaire for himself in a rich-eat-rich world.

Merry Christmas, slaves.

think the outcome will be a pretty sight.

Was the money poorly invested or is it in off shore accounts?

We are truly slaves to the rich.

edit: spelling

8. There is something very peculiar about the Madoff Ponzi Scheme
It looks like he only went after the rich. It was a Ponzi scheme, so, you had to have money to get in, because he needed the money to pay off the other wealthy investors who invested first.

10. I guess if one is going to steal it's best to steal big time! I wonder if
Madoff ever intended to invest the money profitably for his investors or it he just stole a percentage of it and used another part to pay back to keep the scheme going?
