Another reason to dislike Rick Warren: He Blames the Economy on the People
In his interview with Campbell Brown on NBC's Dateline, Rick Warren made it clear that the problems with the economy are solely due to our lack of humility and the fact that "We have walked away from God's principles" which he claims include thrift and delayed gratification. "We buy things we don't need with money we don't have to impress people we don't like...when the chickens come home to roost we start to blame God for our economic problems."

Uh, and what about blaming the senators and presidents he likes to pal around with? Shouldn't McCain share some of the blame for deregulation and pushing Reaganomics? What about his friend George Bush who illegally started an incredibly expensive war? What about the corruption on Wall Street? Aren't the banks and big businesses at least partially responsible for pushing us to use credit cards, buy big gas guzzling cars, and take out sub-prime mortgages? What about those times when Bush was urging us to go shopping in order to teach the terrorists a lesson?

Regardless of how you feel about Warren's position on gay marriage, there may be an even greater danger in his relationship with Obama. If the economy gets worse during an Obama prsidency, and it likely will get worse before it gets better, then Rick Warren will always be there to tell his flock of evangelicals that all of the blame lies with them, and to deflect any blame away from the people who control most of the wealth and power and who truly deserve to be blamed.

1. Very interesting post here which may explain Warren's views on the economy....

linking Dominionism with "Christian Libertarianism", a dangerous form of social darwinism which is slavish to the rich and violently anti-union:

2. Yikes. Won't he be a perfect cheerleader for the rough times ahead
Yes, we brought it on ourselves.

:puke:

Ugh. It's not unprecedented throughout history to bring on the religion when the economy tanks.

Fuck him.

3. The "old-time religion" lifting up peoples' spirits is one thing...

but submitting to the god of power and wealth that Warren worships will lead to nothing more than slavery.

7. Quite literally too!

The ultimate goal is to do away with all social programs and replace these with old testament indentured servitude.

We're headed in that direction as it is, but these people are determined to go all the way. Are you poor and/or homeless? You'll have the opportunity to literally sell yourself for a period of 7 years wherein your wealthy owner will provide you with room and board in exchange for your labor. Either that, or you can enlist in the military, which by then will be God's Army.

4. How Barack Obama hung Rick Warren out to dry:
We know how that turned out.

God's little gifts.

5. Not yet
It remains to be seen. And like Obama has said, he needs us to make the change happen.

Well, I see a big change already. Fundies are being exposed left and right. And the leader of the fundies is in Obama's crosshairs, and more importantly, our's.

Don't you think Obama learned something from watching his friend Rev. Wright get plastered? And that it probably pissed him off greatly?

6. A lot more people know about Rick Warren now.
I, for one, wasn't aware of his positions because of lack of exposure.

It's good to drag these people out into the daylight and let everyone get a good look.

9. But, he's being placed in a spotlight
Not dragged into the daylight. There is a huge difference between exposing and honoring. Giving Warren the platform does nothing but legitimize him. I hear nothing from Obama that 'exposes' Warren, just much that promotes him and his anti-woman anti-gay, anti- working person dominionism.

10. Not to mention that gay rights are back at the forefront
Completely off-the-top-of-my-head-theory, but this might allow Obama to repeal DADT or enact legislation banning discrimination in the workplace based off of sexual preference or something along those line, because now he has to "make up for Warren and apologize to the LBGT community".

11. To make up for Warren
only the whole enchilada will do. That is what he has done. Hope he's ready for it. The whole enchilada.

14. The whole enchilada would be ideal
But reaching for too much too fast will leave you with nothing. The backlash from Republicans and the Religious Right will be beyond belief, and you'll end up with nothing and much further from achieving anything.

That's my honest assessment.

13. Or
He realized that all this would motivate people to act, finally.

He can point to the uproar and say: we need to do the right thing.

15. How about the CEOs that offshore jobs to countries that are telling us to fix our economic crisis?
To me, the economy is #1 by a long shot, save for possibly the defense of America. Anything else I am more than happy to be humble about and in humility of. For both of these affect EVERY American far more than any other issue.

22. Excellent point, I forgot to mention those who are behind globalization...

Warren's brand of religion provides a perfect smokescreen for those who are selling out America. They will claim that America is doomed because we are all sinners, not because we have been duped.

21. And he is selling Video Games...

... wherein any properly motivated 12 year old can either "convert" or gun down heathens, atheists, apostates, gays, and non-evangelical Christians in a post-apocalyptic world.

Can theme parks be far behind?
