Bernie Madoff, who made off with billions of $$$, placed under house arrest
Edited on Wed Dec-17-08 01:29 PM by Texas Explorer
http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/WallStreet/story?id=6480363&page=1">Bernard Madoff, accused of the largest fraud in U.S. history, will be allowed to remain in his $7 million Park Avenue apartment instead of being sent to jail, under terms of an agreement announced today by federal prosecutors.

Meanwhile, Mark Howington had to repay the $300 he stole from a blind man and then went to jail Monday.

Howington, 30, pleaded guilty Nov. 6 to a misdemeanor and admitted he stole the money from the safe of the Courthouse Deli, owned and operated by Kent Parker, who is blind.

The deli is on the first floor of the Hamilton County Courthouse.

Howington was the boyfriend of Starr Pate, one of Parker's workers.

The pair was in the deli after hours June 24 when Pate was cleaning and restocking. That's when Howington twice went into the deli's safe and stole the money, an act captured on video.

1. Jailed for stealing $300 from a blind man? I got that beat
Here's one:
Police arrest man accused of taking 42 cents from mall fountain
http://www.naplesnews.com/news/2008/jul/22/bonita-man-arrested-after-allegedly-stealing-42-ce/

In fact, just google 'jailed for petty theft' and you'll see a whole range of awful crimes people have been jailed for, like stealing food out of dumpsters, nibbling on grapes in the supermarket, etc...

I can see why they wouldn't want the delicate Mr. Madoff to be put in the same jail as those hardened criminals...it just wouldn't be fair.

Now, please excuse me while I :puke:

3. anybody who signs up with the military & put their life on the line to defend this country is a SAP!
america is a two-tiered society- the wealthy and the commoners, and there's different rules of justice for each.

4. he's only under house arrest from 7pm to 9am...
from your linked article:

Madoff and his luxury apartment on Manhattan's upper east side will be fitted with an electronic monitoring device by the court's pre-trial services and Madoff will be under a curfew of between 7 p.m. through 9 a.m.
