The best reference (because it fits in the context of the big picture) is William Shirer's 'Rise and Fall of the Third Reich', which documents years of bumbling and unsiezed initiatives, as well as a few unlucky failures at the same target. It's 1000+ pages though, so you might want to set aside a few weeks and pick something completely unrelated and less gloomy to read afterwards.
