Petition circulating to call for vote on banning affirmative action in Missouri
A petition to amend the Missouri Constitution relating to banning affirmative action can circulate among voters, Secretary of State Robin Carnahan announced today.
The proposal calls for changing the state constitution to ban affirmative action programs designed to eliminate discrimination against, and improve opportunities for, women and minorities in public contracting, employment and education.
The change also would ban preferential treatment based on race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin to meet federal program funds eligibility standards as well as preferential treatment for bona fide qualifications based on sex.
The proposal sponsored by the Missouri Civil Rights Initiative in Grain Valley needs to obtain signatures from eight percent of the total votes case in the 2008 governor’s election from six of nine congressional districts to make it to the November, 2010 election, according to Carnahan’s office.
