SPECTER'S STRANGE HUMOR

PEOPLE in Pennsylvania, at least Republicans, aren't as politically correct as the citizens of New York. Sen. Arlen Specter was the speaker yesterday at the Rainbow Room for the annual meeting of the Commonwealth Club, a group of Keystone State Republicans who come to Manhattan every yuletide. A witness reports Specter began by asking if anyone in the room was Polish. About 10 guests out of hundreds there raised their hands. Specter deemed the number insignificant and forged ahead with some supposedly funny Polish jokes, including the old one about the man who interrupted him once, saying, "Hey, careful. I'm Polish!" Specter said he responded, "That's OK - I'll tell it more slowly." Specter also told two other tasteless jokes in the same Polish vein. "No one walked out, but it was offensive," said our source. "I was offended, and I'm not Polish."

1. Well, ol' Arlen's been in that seat since what, the Harding administration?
I think he's vulnerable in roughly equal parts because he's pretty clueless to begin with and also because he tends to do a hat trick, flashing a "moderate" or (sometimes) "progressive" public posture on a bill or an issue, and then abandoning it when the bill actually hits the Senate floor.

His people will do some private polling in the coming months and my guess is they'll show him at less than 50% approval, and that he'll decide not to seek re-election.

2. Great analysis. But Tweety is an empty vessel, I guess same as the SPECTER you describe.
Your description would fit Tweety in my book: "...pretty clueless to begin with and also because he tends to do a hat trick, flashing a "moderate" or (sometimes) "progressive" public posture on a bill or an issue, and then abandoning it when the bill actually hits the Senate floor."

I wish your last sentence would fit him as well, but he's such an egomaniac that he will be self-dazzled into "forcing" himself into running.

3. Hi, UTUSN. Yes. This is going to be an interesting race, and I haven't
even factored that rightwing moron Toomey into the mix yet.

I hope everyone involved in that Senate race has deep hip waders. I think they'll come in real handy.

4. And your last sentence is spot on too
"but he's such an egomaniac that he will be self-dazzled into "forcing" himself into running."

Yes, yes, this is exactly how his announcement will be made if he decides to go for it.

"Pennsylavanians are crying out for my candidacy and while I love doing Hardball ((even though, uhhh, cough, cough, NBC wouldn't cave to my demands for $5 mill a year)) I cannot not disappoint you and so I will sacrifice and run because obviously you need me."

I seriously hope that you take that succint, perfect gem of yours and cross post it over in GD:P where there are a small handful touting Tweety's "amazing Democratic bona fides." Yuck!
