GM is still the U.S. sales leader
So, please, stop trying to tell me that nobody buys American cars. OK?

2. Yeah, it's pretty annoying. I don't like the Big 3 and don't think they deserve a bailout...
but it's really annoying how many people say things like "nobody wanted to buy their crappy cars." GM is still #2 worldwide! Their financial problems have nothing to do with car sales. It's simply due to mismanagement and bad investments in the finance division.

I say the government should force GMAC to split off as a separate company. Allow the current GM management to stay on... as the heads of GMAC. Get GM new management and redo this year's books so that GM is a profitable company and only GMAC has to go into bankruptcy. If we really want to save manufacturing in this country we should force the automakers to focus on manufacturing and get out of the banking business.

6. Do you like the taxes this company pays into your American economy? If not, I do.
They pay a pile in taxes and we sorta need that for the US economy these days....just a thought.

7. Um, OK. I'm not sure what that has to do with what I said.
I guess now on DU we're not allowed to criticize any corporation that pays taxes in the US? Hooray for Halliburton, WalMart, Exxon, GE, etc.!

4. There are 5 in this household,
including one purchased 6 weeks ago.

Everybody to their own taste--GM's just happen to be what we like!

10. GM was 2nd largest car company in the world, by volume, in 2007
Edited on Sat Dec-13-08 02:35 AM by lithiumbomb
I'm not sure why people want GM to fail, at least not in the middle of a fragile economic recession and possible depression. The ramifications are going to be quite serious if they do. In 2007, by volume, they were the second largest car company on earth, having just been overtaken by Toyota by about 100k cars. They made 9.35 million vehicles in 2007. And as the original poster points out, they remain the US sales leader. They sold 3.82 million vehicles in the united states in 2007.

I suspect they will fall further into 2nd place in 2008, but will still be a solid second ahead of Volkswagen Group in worldwide sales. I bet that they are still the largest car company.

Sales will be down sharply for _everyone_ in 2008. Not just the Big 3. 2008 figures should be out in early January.

Does GM need some serious restructuring? Yes. Does it need to happen all at once, right now? God no.

11. We've had 4 GM cars in my lifetime
5, if Chevrolet was a division of GM back in 1961 when our Corvair was built.

We've also had some Fords in our driveway. :)

I love Japan and Korea (esp. their music), but for things like cars, I buy American. :patriot:
