I could get a 3 year loan with 1.9% interest on a new car but not a used car.

18. I'll second that. 1984. Dayum, it's been a long time.
However, I have to admit, I haven't *needed* to own a car for the past twenty years and looking at the actual costs of owning in the city - insurance, maintenance and the inevitable tickets - made it easy to donate the last vehicle to charity and switch to renting.

12. Other....
1992 Dodge Shadow. Ran great for about 5 years then the paint started peeling off the roof and hood. Soon after, it started leaking oil. Put varying amounts of money into it for the next 3 years, and finally decided it wasn't worth it any longer. Drove it to the auto wreckers (trailing oil the whole way), got $100 bucks, and went out for lunch.

Either program cars, courtesy cars or rental returns, always low miles (10,0000 or less). Never take that hit for the new car.

But I did buy a '02 Ford Escort ZX2 new, off the lot, four years ago. Ford had a bunch of them, never sold after the Focus came out, and the dealer bought five of them.

I got it for a little over ten grand.

It runs ok, but stuff breaks on it waaaay to soon, and I am a fanatic about maintenance.

32. Ten years ago, and that Honda is still going strong
No major repairs, just regular maintenance. The last new car that I bought before that was an '87 Toyota, and it's still running strong at over 250,000 miles, with no major repairs, again, just regular maintenance. I can't afford to buy low quality, high maintenance cars, which is what the Big Three were putting out for a long, long while. I understand that they've changed that here in the past few years, so next time I go to buy a new car, I'll give them a good look. But that's not going to be for a long while, until these other two die.

35. 2004 but only because
the car I owned at the time was hit in a parking lot by an uninsured illegal immigrant. Two surprises: (1) the cops came and took an accident report and (2) the felow that hit me actually stuck around and was still there when the cops arrived.

The car which was wrecked had about 50,000 miles on it. The car I replaced it with has less than 30,000 miles on it. I'd probably still be driving the older vehicle but for (1) the damage to the vehicle and (2) some pretty damn good incentives to replace the vehicle with a new car (insurance claim check plus trade in value at book value for unrepaired but low mileage vehicle plus large rebate plus financing incentive even though financing was paid before any interest accrued). I think I paid about $10,00 for a new midsize US maker grandma car with a 5 year extended warranty.

I had a car.

It had 50,000 miles on it when it was wrecked.

I had some pretty damn good incentives to replace it with a new car.

I did so.

The new car has less than 30,000 miles on it.

But for the wreck I would likely still be driving the previous vehicle as it would still have less than 100,000 miles on it.

Edit: I refered to "incentives to replace the vehicle with a new car" in my earlier post. Sorry you missed that.

Wow, I hadn't thought about it very much.

In 1990, I bought a new Geo Prizm. That's the last brand new car I bought.

My then husband bought a used Ford (forget the model) in 1995. We were in trouble then and he bought it without my consent, for what I thought was a very bad deal and high interest. I told him he could keep it in the divorce. In fact, I forced him to. He wanted to keep it, and have me make the payments. A couple of years later, he totaled it. And probably still doesn't drive now.

I probably will not own another brand new car. They are simply too expensive for a one person salary. And I hate all the price haggling.

Currently, I drive a 2002 used Honda CR-V with all the extras. When I bought it, it had 16K on it and I payed about 8K less than a brand new one. I plan to keep this car for 10 years.

I'll stick to slightly used, newish cars with less than 20K miles on them when I need a new car.

41. We bought a new Hyundai Elantra, a 2000 model, in October of '99.
Still have it. Looks like hell, but runs just fine. 4 cyl, 5 speed, uses regular , gets around 25 MPG, always in city traffic.
Plan to keep it till is is no longer drivable or repairable.
First new car I ever bought, I think my wife's second. (She bought a new Subaru Justy in 95.)
We also have a 99 VW Pasatt that is a great car, but used premium gas.

I doubt I will ever buy another new car again - the insurance is a racket.

I have not purchased a new car for myself since 1984. In 1988 my wife and I bought a new car, but it was essentially 'her' car, as I kept my own, so I count that as her purchase. Every car I've had since then has been pre-owned.

50. When I got married my husband was in
the habit of buying new cars, not that he bought a new one very often. His attitude was, why buy someone else's problems?

So during our marriage we bought a total of six new cars for the two of us over a period of twenty-one years. Then, when I helped our oldest son buy a car, and new was out of the question, I discovered the genuine joys of buying used. Ever since then we've bought pre-owned cars, and except for the first one which was a Pontiac Sunfire, it's been Honda Accords or Civics. But I can't imagine at this point ever buying new again.

Better yet, because of a series of accidents and wanting to replace previous cars, I participated in the purchase of eight Hondas between March, 2005 and July, 2007. Got to be some kind of a record.

Sienna has been in the shop exactly once - for a new hatch lock. Prior car, a '91 Chevy Suburban, had accumulated a 3 inch high stack of repair orders, including a new wiring harness, and 10 or 11 of the same defective accelerator part, by the time the warranty was about to expire. Not even to mention the days of work lost, the walking to phones to call tow trucks, the limping home at 10 mph in moving traffic. We dumped it by the warranty expiration date and we'll never go back.

It was not an experience I'd like to repeat, so I probably won't do it again.

I loathe cars anyways. I like one I can leave unlocked with the windows open in crowded parking lots notorious for nicks and scrapes. Nicks and scrapes and small dents add character to a car over the years.

I currently drive a 1984 Toyota.

62. 2007 Saturn Ion
I bought it to replace my 1999 Saturn SW2 after an accident (220K miles on it). I bought that one new, also. Someone in another thread called me a "spoiled ass" because I had the 2007 car made for me, since none of the existing ones had all the features I wanted. Here I thought I was keeping Americans employed. Whatever...

Please don't hate on me because I like to buy my cars new. I commute 102 miles round trip 5 days a week and don't want to "save money" by buying a used car that might not take the 30K miles a year. It's also why I bought a Saturn, since they're supposed to last into the 300K range or more and get good mpg.
