McConnell: "very few of us had anything to do with the dilemma they created for themselves."

"None of us want to see them go down," McConnell said Thursday night, "but very few of us had anything to do with the dilemma they created for themselves."

Reid realized early Thursday that he couldn't win enough votes to stop procedural delays aimed at derailing the House bill, so Dodd had been talking behind closed doors with United Auto Workers union officials and Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., about a compromise.

They were said to be close — Corker said the negotiators were two or three words away from a deal.

There was little disagreement on two of Corker's points: That companies would be forced to cut outstanding unsecured debt by at least two-thirds, and health and benefit plan funding would get half their scheduled payments in company stock.

However, the negotiators became stuck over labor issues. Corker wanted American auto company workers to earn the same as those who work for foreign-based manufacturers.

"There was no debate ... we ought to achieve parity on wages and benefits," Dodd said. "The issue was the timing of it."

Republicans wanted the change to take effect next year, but Sen. George Voinovich, R-Ohio, said the union was willing to make the change in 2011.

That clash "was the whole potato," said Sen. Pete Domenici, R-N.M.

1. Bullshit...
When the republican house and senate voted for increasing the one time write off for vehicles over 6000 lbs, essentially SUV and Hummers, up to 100,000, skewed the market toward these huge vehicles.

2. It was a non-starter poison pill...
Corker and the repukes KNEW that the UAW wouldn't concede this one. It kills the union.

And, it's my belief they want to cause the big three to go bankrupt. They want the car companies that have plants in their states to win. Even if those companies aren't American (repukes hate America). So they offered up a deal with the union busting poison pill, knowing that the UAW wouldn't go for it.

3. I think you're right. But your 'repukes hate America' is so
ironic considering the flag pin b.s. It's nuts.

5. Bullshit is right ...
DECADES of wage suppression formed the foundation of GOP labor philosophy ....

That chicken has come home to roost ...

Auto workers can afford to buy their cars .... It is the rest of us NON union workers that are struggling, thanks to a successful implementation of a conservative labor policy that has reduced workers to wage slaves ...

McConnell is DIRECTLY responsible for this debacle ...

6. Why shouldn't the foreign car cos. wages be RAISED to "parity"?
The "race to the bottom" ideology is what got us here. And why should the foreign cos. be allowed to be non-union anyway? Maybe we do need a general solidarity strike. Dems should vote down all the appropriations for red states out of the budget, or anything these Repubs want - to hold their feet to the fire until they knock it off. Hostage for hostage.

This is why we need card check. We need that before anything will get done right.

9. I have an answer to that.
Very few of us had anything to do with the human and financial disaster that mainly Republicans created in Iraq so I see no reason we should have to help pay for it.
