Specter just said 10 Republicans voted for cloture
That means they would have had the votes if all the Democrats had voted for it. So who voted against it? Or was it an issue of people not showing up? Either way this is unacceptable.

I heard Bacchus, Mulkulski and Blanche ???? from Ark. voted no!
I also heard that Snow, Gregg and Lugar voted yes at first and then votes were changed back to no.

I'm confused!

2. Not defending the Dems opposed to cloture, but
39 out of 49 Republicans were against it, but apparently something like 48 or 49 of 51 Democrats were for it. I know some people will use this as an occasion to bash our own party for being the same as the Repubs, but this case is not evidence for that.

8. 12 other senators
Obama resigned his Senate seat 2 weeks ago. So there are only 99 senators, which should lower the number needed for cloture. And technically cloture is supposed to be 3/5 of those present and voting.

7. it was 52-35
if 10 Republicans voted for cloture then only 42 Democrats (possibly including Lieberman and Sanders) voted for Cloture.

of course where the hell were the other 12 Senators?

and why do people suddenly find their principles when ignoring them could help middle class working people?

they could abandon their principles when it came to banks, but now?

nevermind that it is good in principle to keep people working.

25. Reid voted for it, then changed his vote for precedural reasons
So he could bring the bill back up.

Reid (procedural reasons)
Kennedy (still out ill)
Kerry (out of the country)
Biden (wasn't there)
Tester - Montana
Baucus - Montana
Lincoln

That's 7 of them. I'm not sure about the rest, I don't remember

14. Biden said he would be there if they needed him
And he was in DC today so he might have been. I don't know if Clinton was there but I'd be surprised if she wasn't. She said she intends to continue doing her job as a senator until she is confirmed.

What sucks is that Obama resigned his Senate seat two weeks ago thinking that he'd have a replacement by now, since he was going to be busy with transition and did not want to leave the Democrats short of a vote. Of course, he did not know that Blago was going to try to sell the seat instead of replacing him quickly to take advantage of the extra seniority Illinois would have gotten.

16. It takes 60 votes to invoke cloture. and potentially just 1 to defeat it.
And all 60 votes need to be there.

29. Can't we ever acknowledge when someone does the right thing?
Why do we always have to say "but they did all these other evil things so it doesn't count." Let's give credit where credit is due. If Bush does the right thing today and uses the TARP funds, I am going to give him credit for it, and not get snarky about how he's just working on his legacy or what not. It won't undo or make up for all the bad things he has done by any stretch of the imagination, but it is the right thing to do and if he does it we ought to give him credit for doing the right thing.

30. No, because it's not the "right thing" if that's why you do it
If you murder someone, but then pay for their funeral, is THAT the "right thing"? That's how I feel about BUsh doing this -- and Liddy Dole to an extent. I lived in NC for 17 years, my parents still do -- my Dad's in textiles. They aren't doing the "right thing."
