2. Let's put more money
into fighting cancer than everything else combined, times 10.

3. it is a very surreal moment when the dr. tells you it's cancer, especially when it wasn't expected.

"we found a growth, and it was cancerous..."

:wow:

(it turns out having the cystoscopy with the vasectomy WAS a good idea)

5. I hope this survives clinical studies and becomes a legit treatment

There are endless ideas in cancer R&D but there is no telling if/when they will make it into daily use in hospitals.

The father of my college roommate did cancer research on inhibition of the PI-Kinase pathway and its role in cancer.

http://www.bizjournals.com/atlanta/stories/2008/05/12/focus9.html

I did undergraduate research in using lanthanide nanoparticles for localized chemotherapy. So there are endless ideas, but who knows which ones will actualy survive clinical trials and end up being safe and effective enough to be put into widespread use.

On an unrelated note, I personally believe that the cure for obesity will come out of cancer research as both are based on the same goals (killing off some human cells while leaving others alive, stopping replication of unwanted cells, starvation of unwanted cells, etc). So cancer research could be a twofer. Curing obesity could go a long way towards fighting type II diabetes and osteoarthritis.

6. There's too much money in cancer now, IMO --
and too little attention to pollution, diet, immune system ...
