...has to do with the NYC Charter which, whatever you think of the idea, can be changed by the Council. Elected officials should (but probably won't) he held accountable for their vote.
Most likely candidates at this point will be Congressman Anthony Wiener (Jewish), and City Comptroller William Thompson (Black). Most other prospective candidates will probably choose to stay in their current offices.
Personally, I'm not sure the Democrats could have won next year in any case. Democratic Party politics in the city has become so balkanized, with each candidate representing a particular ethnic/geographic/political subdivision, that it becomes very difficult for them to coalesce around the winner. The easy comment to make is that Bloomberg "bought" the 2001 election; the reality is that Marc Green and Freddy Ferrer couldn't patch up their differences after the Primary.
