3. It should be interesting
I admit that I'm not crazy about the choice, mainly because I'm not sure how Obama and she will reconcile their views and intentions and form a coherent policy, but I'm encouraged that Hillary Clinton has shown great growth during the campaign and has the gravitas to make that position important and visible. I look forward to seeing her enunciate the president's policy and seeing her work with world leaders to promote and manage that policy.

Some leaders of other countries are damn well weary of Iran also, so this isn't the happy paranoia that you and others bathe in every morning.

53. In 1992, Al Gore was saying what GWB said in 2003.
Edited on Mon Dec-01-08 03:38 PM by HypnoToad
True, it was 1992, but for Al to say Saddam had WMDs and this and that, et cetera, et cetera, and I wish I had seen this video before 2007:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDitSbkQKIs

9 minutes, 28 seconds - seems to include a lot of context as well. A shame tax dollars paid for it, but... whatever. Watch it, agree, disagree, it's all interesting stuff. I won't deny some of what he says is legitimate, but at the same time, how can Al and GWB say the same things yet Al be right and GWB be wrong? Color me confused. Edify me. I will listen.

Or was it 1993 - whatever. Previous politicians said Saddam had WMDs, pursuing nuclear weapons, blah blah blah. Must be some truth in there somehow...

36. You DO understand, don't you,
that she never threatened to "obliterate" Iran?

She indicated that she is sure they know we could do so if they threaten us with nuclear weapons.

Perhaps you ought to start listening to what people actually say, and not rely so much on the interpretations of the Hillary Haters here.

50. "Everything we can to" seems to imply military force
Edited on Mon Dec-01-08 03:27 PM by wuushew
To deny the Holocaust places Iran's leadership in company with the most despicable bigots and historical revisionists. It is an insult, not only to a memory of the millions of Jews who suffered and died in the Shoah but also to the troops of the U.S. and its allies, who in the fight to liberate Europe from Nazism bore witness to the reality of the Holocaust.

Such comments add greater urgency to the necessity to doing everything we can to deny nuclear weapons to Iran. The regime's pro-terrorist, anti-American, anti-Israeli rhetoric only underscores the urgency of our response to the threat we face.

U.S. policy must be clear and unequivocal. We cannot, we should not, we must not, permit Iran to build or acquire nuclear weapons. And in dealing with this threat as I have said for a very long time, no option can be taken off the table.

What other leverage would accomplish the goal with similar certainty? Iran is an energy super power with eager customers in India and China. What set of goods is of greater monetary value and prestige than continuing with a domestic nuclear program?

57. Well, first,
"to do everything we can" may certainly include military force as a last resort. It may also include sanctions, or other penalties. I see nothing at all in that statement suggesting it would be a first choice.

Do you think President Obama would be unwilling to use military force, if necessary, to prevent Iran from using nuclear weapons against any other nation in the world? If you do, you are wrong.

Nuclear energy is one thing. Allowing them to acquire nuclear weapons is another. Particularly given the clearly stated hatred of Israel voiced by the Irani leadership.

58. The ability to destroy civilization has been around since 1953 and the creation of the H-bomb
Edited on Mon Dec-01-08 10:35 PM by wuushew
Why are some countries allowed in the select nuclear club and not others? India is certainly no less a worthy a country than China. The Indian nuclear program was the Raison d'être for the Pakistani program and I am certain they do not wish to part with their arsenal. Pakistan is directly next door to Iran but why do I not hear Israeli bluster about this potential threat?

Why would it not be prudent for Iran to deter any possible war with Pakistan in the future? You see that there can be no clear delineation of threats in a grey world. It is this very hypocrisy that creates conflict. Objective comparison of cultural virtues is simply not possible nor wise. Given this it is more simple and diplomatic to treat all nations as equals.

Every country on Earth shares some probability greater than zero of blinking out of existence. No matter the chance of this horrific possibility is is still a hypothetical event where as military action to prevent it carries as 100% chance of murdering innocents. Is the probability adjusted rate of death greater for the former and not the latter? Can these actuarial scenarios be determined by impartial political minds?

There are other possibilities besides mutual extinction between warring nations. You can observe the preparations of your enemy and strike him before he attacks. I refer of course to the proper use of preemption as opposed to preventative war.

Alternatively you can use technology to mitigate the effects of atomic weapons. We see from the shoot down of the malfunctioning U.S. satellite recently, that given billions and billions of dollars it is possible to destroy objects reentering the atmosphere to some degree.

Finally the ability to seriously and grievously injure a country is possible without atomics. Both Britain and Germany refrained from using chemical warfare in WWII because the retribution of by the other side would have been immense. Israel is a small country and with modern chemical agents most of the population could be exterminated below the level which statehood is viable. If war is justified over nuclear weapons then why not chemical? The threat is fully formed now.

Given nature of the world post-1945, post-Trinity why would anything like Zionism make sense? Dispersion allows a better survival mechanism in nature than isolation.

People are finite as ultimately are countries, it is not important to believe that we will endure forever, but rather that the worthiness of our respective civilizations is judged by our actions while we exist.

Having varied and sometimes drastically different opinions on your team is a sign of a very intelligent and mature leader - I think her experience and the confidence to say what she thinks whether it's popular or not with her boss, and his ability to take criticism and differing ideas and use them in his decision making - will make this a very strong administration.
