Republican Senate aide: "Democrats smell blood in the water, and (Gonzo) resignation won't stop them"

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0307/3202.html

<snip>

In a sign of Republican despair, GOP political strategists on Capitol Hill said that it is too late for Gonzales' departure to head off a full-scale Democratic investigation into the motives and timing behind the firing of eight U.S. attorneys.

"Democrats smell blood in the water, and (Gonzales') resignation won't stop them," said a well-connected Republican Senate aide. "And on our side, no one's going to defend him. All we can do is warn Democrats against overreaching."

...

But officials on Capitol Hill said that after the Justice Department failed to turn over a batch of e-mails about the prosecutors on Friday as expected, Republican senators became less likely to defend Gonzales or the White House. They feared the delay signaled more damaging information was in the pipeline.

"We have a crisis where there doesn't need to be one, and now Democrats have an issue where they can open up the subpoena floodgates," said an exasperated Republican aide. "Once these investigations start, there always ends up being a lot of messy collateral damage."

5. A lot indeed...may the political schrapnel shred whatever
is left of the veil of deceit surrounding this mis-administration. I hope the collateral damage brings the whole shit pile crashing to the ground.

15. it's not only that, it offers a huge look into their little bag of tricks
I'm just astonished by this comment. Do you know what it means? EVERY time you ever hear a Repug say that, we've got 'em by the short hairs. Every damn time. And that's their ONLY retort, and their only hope -- that we go so far over the top that the public will come after US. But it's just wishful thinking.

I LOVE this!

I always thought that sounded a bit weak, but now I know it's DESPERATE.

7. OVERREACHING?? OVERREACHING?? there is no POSSIBLE way the dems could overreach in their efforts
to get to the bottom of the fetid, festering sewer that is this lying, thieving, murdering maladministration.

this jerk reminds me of * yesterday, demanding that the dems do things HIS way. as KO said, "didn't somebody tell him what the election results were?"

8. ding ding ding! The Cons experience with 'overreaching' was
to reach from behind till they had Clinton's member and wait for him to slip up about it. It's a whoooollllle lot different when you're skirting issues of the Bushetals' crimes.

18. Exactly
Why in heck should we settle for one resignation? Everyone who was involved should resign. There's no criminal matter here because what they did wasn't illegal, but the investigation goes way beyond Gonzo.

He-has-got-to-be-kidding-me. If I were Mr. Senate Aide, I'd be worrying about my own damn problems....like YOUR party breaking laws. Remember???? "The rule of law!" "The rule of law!" Remember that from the 90s? I do. Screw you Mr. Senate Aide.
