Elisabeth Hasselbeck defends torture (Hasselbeck watch: Day 2!)
Edited on Tue Mar-20-07 01:01 PM by lynyrd_skynyrd
Yesterday evening, I posted a thread on my general disdain for Elisabeth Hasselbeck, the young blond airhead on ABC's "The View". Not even 24 hours have passed and I feel I must once again express my discontent. I know Sean Hannity and Bill O'Reilly have made the Top 10 Conservative Idiot list numerous times, but I don't know if Ms. Hasselbeck has ever achieved the honor.

Today they interviewed filmmaker Rory Kennedy, the woman behind the upcoming HBO documentary (which I think we all ought to watch) Ghosts Of Abu Ghraib. Once the preliminary questioning about the film's content was done, we learned the following facts.

1) The soldiers who abused and tortured the prisoners were ordered to do so from the very top echelons of the military, up to, and including the Pentagon.
2) The specific methods of the torture are documented. For example, the infamous "human pyramid" was an actual order passed down the chain of command.
3) The people behind these orders have not been held to account. (The soldiers who carried out the orders, however, were easily scapegoated, as we all know).
4) Innocent people were tortured without charges and subsequently released.
5) Children were held in the prison. (Whether children were tortured is something I did not catch).

During the dissemination of these facts, I watched in growing horror as Ms. Hasselbeck went into an apoplectic fit unlike one I've ever seen before. While denouncing torture from one side of her mouth, she simultaneously condoned it from the other, saying, in essence, that while she thought torture was "wrong", she wanted to know Ms. Kennedy's views on how far the government ought to go when "interrogating" "known terrorists". As Ms. Kennedy attempted to respond, Ms. Hasselbeck continued to interrupt, clearly seeing that Ms. Kennedy was not going to agree with the right wing talking point Ms. Hasselbeck undoubtedly picked up from Fox News the night before. (I suspected this even more when she referred to Khalid Sheikh Mohammed as "KSM", ignoring the fact that her bringing him up was entirely irrelevant to the subject at hand).

During this entire one sided exchange, the expression on Joy Behar's face was one of contained rage, while Rosie O'Donnell's expression was one of utter disgust with what she was witnessing. Eventually Rosie stepped in and essentially told Ms. Hasselbeck to shut up.

Paraphrasing:
"Elisabeth, you can't go on like this. You asked her a question, let her answer the question. You can't just keep spouting off your opinion."

Elisabeth (stammering): "I did ask her a question..."
Rosie (Cutting Elisabeth Off): "You asked her if she thought torture was right and she said no."

In hindsight I wish I had recorded this entire segment so I could have posted it on YouTube. Hopefully, someone else out there did, because I think you all need to see this. (Crooks & Liars, I'm counting on you!) I didn't intend to post another thread so soon about Elisabeth Hasselbeck, but I didn't expect her utter stupidity and ignorance to show itself in such spectacular fashion so quickly. Here she was, arguing for the torture of innocent human beings in the face of actual facts presented to her not 30 seconds before. It was as if her brain is connected to a vast right wing computer network, constantly updating her with instructions on what to say to anyone who goes against its predefined memes.

2. Hasselbeck is why I stopped watching The View
I could not stand to listen to the ignorant clap trap that came out of Hasselbeck's mouth. No one had the nerve to face her down until Rosie got there. Rosie will not her go on and on. Thye give her the space to give her opinion, but it is now challenged and not just let ride.

3. She is the darling of the right wing
Elizabeth usually ends up looking stupid. Rosie and Joy do a great job of countering her rw talking points.

I watched that segment only because Rory Kennedy
was on. Der Blondie ought to shut up because it only reafirms the fact that there's no there, there.

4. Joy was probably ready to rip her head off.
The View has become a pretty good boiling pot since Rosie joined.

5. the woman is like so many righties
They are living in such fear that they NEED to believe in the government and that the government is protecting them and will always protect them. Their need to believe in the government, in the USofA is so vital to their existence it is as if their patriotism (nationalism) is their religion. To question the USofA and the tactics of our leaders is just like questioning God.

What is so sad about the lot of them is that they have let the terrorists win. Their living in terror and excusing the violation of our rights and the violations of basic human rights because of that terror is exactly what the terrorists want. To control by fear and the alter what is great about the USofA - * has done the bidding of the terrorists, he has destroyed the image of the USofA, it is no longer a trusted and respected nation.

Fools like that twit on the view have allowed it to happen while calling those of us that truly love our nation and all that it stands for traitors.

12. I mean really- what exactly is it that they feel needs protecting?
It's not our "freedom" or our rights, or our way of life, or apparently even our wealth. It is pretty cowardly to sacrifice the very things we are supposed to be protecting in order to feel a little safer (which we aren't anyway).

13. And many of the fundie Christians tout hate for folks that are
different than what they consider to be "holy" or normal, said hate being contrary to the teachings of Christ. It makes no sense, does it.

They are the ones that need to be "protected" - the terrarists want to destroy us so in order to stop them, we have to let the government do what it has to do. "24" is really not that far from how these folks think - do what it takes to "win" and save us from the evil. If you ask them to describe the terrarists, to give you something to go by, they cannot. They are afraid of bumps in the night, shadows in the corners and the guy under the bed.

It's truly rather pathetic, they ruin our nation because of their fear and thus, they help the terrorists win. :(

6. Does she actually have any fans?
She makes may skin crawl even worse than watching Katie on the World News. Rosie and Joy doing the nightly news would be such a relief.

11. I thought she was a shoe designer/ and a non winning survivor
The only way she survived was latching on to some older guy. But my question is why do they keep her on the show.... does she have fans???

10. I saw that!
Rosie was wanting to jump across the table at little miss! I know Elizabeth is young but :wtf:, thinking torture of another human being, FOR ANY REASON, is okay, is very much beyond my comprehension. I loved Rosie's smack-down!

16. I think Rosie told Elisabeth to "shut up" during the break...
don't you? After the commercial break, the tone seemed to change a bit--less Elisabeth and more of the others speaking.

17. Maybe she could explain, then, why "known terrorists" have been set free?
Maybe because we've imprisoned and tortured completely innocent people??!!

P.S. I'll bet just the Kennedy name incensed EH.
