What do you think of the Aga Khan?
Edited on Tue Nov-25-08 11:40 PM by HEyHEY
I've spent the last couple of days following him around for work. Seems he likes to keep people waiting... And I ain't down with this Ismailist line of thinking where if you aren't one of them you can't be near their religious ceremonies.

Everything else about him seems cool.

7. He's a far cry from his grandfather
I remember how the old Aga Khan was weighed by his followers each year and presented with his weight in riches. He was quite obese. Poor Aly. He was passed over by his father because he disapproved of his playboy life.

(snip)

PM: Are you still given your weight in gold, platinum or diamonds?

AK: The question of weightings, like many other things, have taken on mythical proportions. For my own part, I have never been weighed against gold or precious gems. It was to celebrate his fiftieth and sixtieth Imamat anniversaries that my grandfather received his weight in gold and diamonds, which have since then entered the legend books. But at the time of his seventieth anniversary, since he was already suffering, the ceremonies marking his platinum jubilee were only symbolic ones. The financial contributions that resulted from these events were used for the local communities. It was through these funds that more than sixty schools here in Pakistan, a large hospital at Nairobi and financial institutions serving the community members in Africa and Asia were created. The western press have falsified the real significance of these weightings, frequently attributing them uniquely to Ismailis, when in fact they also exist with the Sikhs, who also give to a religious figure. The press has gone as far as pretending that this tradition is still maintained today, and that it even happens every year. At the twenty-fifth anniversary of my own Imamat, which was celebrated in 1982, there was no weighting; instead the community defined a certain number of new social projects to celebrate the event.

8. ksk - He was the Aga Khan I remember - God - he was fat!!!! His son, Ali
was married to Rita Hayworth and they had a daughter, Jasmine. I remember when Ali and his current girl at the time - a film star - were killed in a car crash in France. Poor Rita died of Alzheimers
several years later.

Money does not guarantee happiness!

10. Aly Khan was killed in a car crash in 1960
We was with his fiancee, Bettina Graziani the top fashion model of the 1950s. She survived the crash and is still around in her mid 80s.

that he is the (distant) heir of the great Hasan as-Sabbah's mighty legacy. The family has a shameful history of collaboration with British and other western imperialists for the benefit of their narrowly defined sect. On the other hand, they are better at taking care of their world community than most other groups.
