WASHINGTON (AP) -

President-elect Barack Obama signaled Sunday he will move urgently and aggressively to rescue the plunging economy, demanding swift passage by Congress of a massive two-year spending and tax-cutting recovery program. "We're out with the dithering, we're in with a bang," a top Obama aide said. Obama's plans, outlined by his transition team on television talk shows, could put aside his campaign pledge to repeal a Bush tax cut for the wealthy. With the downturn in the economy, those tax cuts may remain in place until they are scheduled to die in 2011, said William M. Daley, an economic adviser. "That looks more likely than not," he said.

Axelrod warned automakers, seeking billions in government help to stave off collapse, to devise a plan to retool and restructure by next month. Otherwise, he said, "there is very little taxpayers can do to help them."

Axelrod couldn't resist taking a jab at the Big Three executives, who left Congress empty-handed last week after flying into Washington in corporate jets and pleading for money. "I hope that they will come back to Washington in early December - on commercial flights - with a plan," he said.

"There won't be any tax increases in the January package," said one Obama aide, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the details of the Obama package have not been fleshed out.

Obama could delay any tax increase to 2011, when current Bush administration tax cuts expire.

1. "details not fleshed out"---it's up to US to tell the Obama admin: the rich should pay more taxes
It's been on our backs for 8 yrs., now let the richies pay up. Sheesh.

We elected this admin---let them HEAR from US.

3. I think Obama knows how we feel.
If he decides to turn his back on those who elected him then that will be that. My peeps tell me to trust the man so I'm going to give it a try. There is no point in telling Obama anything. He knows..it is all in the doing now.

13. Ya know...
I knocked on doors, made the calls, had a house party, volunteered in my local headquarters, donated hundreds of dollars worth of 'chum' (as his staff calls it) to our Obama office and housed out of state volunteers for over two months. Really, if Obama does not know that people put themselves out on his word then nothing I can say or do will matter. The man says he wants to be able to go for walks by himself. That sounds like a guy who will want to be able to look himself in the mirror. That means he will have to do the right thing for the American people.

14. I am guessing this
is some back room negotiations with the republicans to make sure his economic plan sails thru without too much obstruction.

4. It's easier to get tax cuts passed than tax increases
Right now we need to get stuff done and done fast. If the middle class tax cut is just that--a middle class tax cut and nothing else--it will pass easily. No filibuster to worry about. Let the tax cuts for the rich expire quietly in 2011 (the end of FY 2010, really). That way there is no congressional vote that has to be taken to affirmatively repeal them, thereby not allowing the other side to demagogue the issue with 30 second ads ("he voted to raise taxes!!!!"). It is very smart politics.

8. No!! I won't let it happen quietly! It's Wrong and I could care less about the other side
Edited on Sun Nov-23-08 11:35 PM by Breeze54
and I doubt they'll be running any ads. What the hell for? This election cycle is over.

"thereby not allowing the other side to demagogue" Who the hell cares what the RW does?!

The US needs that money! They've (top 1%) gotten away with it for over 7 years. Time to pay up!

9. In fact ... if I recall correctly ...didn't the GOP structure it so that you now
need a super majority to increase taxes on wealthy--??

Maybe even a Constitutional amendment --

They changed a lot of Congressional stuff which should

be changed back ---

They went from simple majority rules to super majorities -- !!

15. No they didn't
Some of the loudmouths who got elected as part of the Contract on America in 1994 proposed such ideas, but nothing ever came of it.

20. GOP changed a lot of the voting from simple majority ...
to super majority --

whether that did include tax increases on elites or not, is a question for future --

10. I really wish these aides..
had names.

The adviser who spoke on condition of anonymity said the plan would likely slow down job losses in 2009, but that new jobs probably would not be evident until 2010.

Obama's plan is both an economic and a political blueprint. By not including tax increases, he silences one potential Republican objection to his plan. If successful, the scope of his plan would set the stage for his other legislative goals, including expanded health care, permanent changes in tax rates and a comprehensive overhaul of energy policy.

"This package is designed to be a down payment to get his entire agenda started," the aide said.

17. But it's the 'spokes' people that say that... not the media.
The spokespeople won't talk to the press, if they mention their names.

Obviously this is a planned 'leak' but many times people say things to the press but they don't want their
names used. You know that but it isn't like we don't know this came from Obama, Axelrod and his helpers.

Right?

23. maybe you know...I don't.
'perhaps' 'maybe', and 'likely', by an 'aide to the transition team', or a 'Democrat close to the transition team', don't do much for me. It's not only the lack of a source, it is the source..such as ABC itself. I prefer to freak over facts, rather than supposition.
