Boston Globe: Gore Camp has "Quietly Put Out Feelers" For a Presidential Run in recent weeks
Edited on Sun Jan-21-07 04:41 PM by impeachdubya
http://www.boston.com/news/globe/editorial_opinion/oped/articles/2007/01/16/another_chance_for_gore/

"More and more people are asking, 'What about Al Gore?' " says Steve Grossman, former chairman of the Democratic National Committee. "If Al Gore were to announce for president, he would be a first-tier candidate on day one. Instead of it being Hillary and Obama on the covers of the national magazines, you would have three faces there."

For those of us who think he's the obvious, clear choice for 2008, all I can say are two things:

RUN, AL, RUN!

And

:woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo:

5. I think no matter if Gore runs or not, Hillary's gonna have real problems getting the nomination.
The corporate media has decided that she's the "front runner"- but how many actual Democrats do you know who are enthusiastically supporting her?

9. I'm hoping Gore gets the nod after a brokered convention
That way, he won't emerge from the primaries as a battered candidate. Because, really, if Gore and Hillary attack each other, they will hurt themselves because they both claim the Clinton White House accomplishments as theirs. It will look like a public version of a back-room argument between co-workers.

15. Excuse my ignorance-but what's a "brokered convention"? You can guarantee
the DLC will not be happy (but of course who the f cares!)

Gore is a populist, and the most experienced to deal with the monumental issue of global warming! He won in 2000 and is way more popular now.

RUN AL RUN!

30. Brokered Convention is where the nominee is someone who
Is arbitrarily chosen at the convention, usually if there's a deadlock on the ballots cast, or if there's a clear dissatisfaction with the candidates running. This is how conventions used to work in both parties, until 1972, when the primary voters became the "deciders" of the nomination process, with the convention delegates merely rubber-stamping the primary voters.

37. Is it possible to do that these days?
I thought that many state organizations have laws/rules that prevent their delegates from doing anything other than voting according to the primary vote.

59. Conventions also have "super-delegates"
And even if a candidate wins enough of a percentage of a state's primary to get delegates, doesn't mean that he will be granted them. Case in point, Lyndon LaRouche won 22% of the vote in the 2000 Arkansas primary and was denied delegates by the DNC. I think this was after Bill Bradley dropped out.

14. by the media deciding this, which IMO, I agree with you on....
they are splitting the dem. primary votes more so. It HELPS her win the nominee, which IMO (again) she would win because of this, and then ultimately lose the pres. election, because she DOESN'T have the support of her own party let alone any republican.

They are throwing her out there, saying it is so...she's the leader for the primary nomination, blah blah, and those who can't stand her, don't want her to run for whatever reason will take their vote to the others...splitting the dem votes ... causing another possible nominee to lose and thus, Hillary becoming the nominee and the next person to lose the white house.

JMO. I know it took ten tries to say what I wanted to, but I have a migraine.. sorry.

16. Migrane or no, I think that's a pretty on target analysis.
From the get-go, the folks most excited about a Hillary Nomination have been the Limbaughs and the Hannitys. Go figger. There was an article in the SF Chronicle a couple days ago about how Hillary is the "darling of the left" --- on what planet? Everyone I know in Democratic activism circles is irritated as hell at her neo-con pandering on Iraq. The media will talk about Iraq and her "1993 Health Care debacle" in one breath, as if those are the two "minor problems" facing her nomination.

No. Iraq is a MAJOR problem, and we absolutely need to nominate someone this time around who can approach it from a point of clarity and moral consistency.

and we tend to prefer populists to elitists.

I sure do hope that Gore runs.

He opposed the war before it started.
He has endorsed single payer fee for service universal health care.
He knows first hand that elections must be free, fair, open, and transparent
And he's got the best environmental credentials on the planet.
We know he can win, because he already did, and he's more popular now than ever.

94. For the umpteenth time, Gore will not be nominated
for an Acadamey Award as he is NOT in the group of Executive Producers for An Inconvenient Truth. There are no acting categories for documentaries. Gore did not sing or offer an original score. President Gore deserves an INVITATION to the Oscars and he will be Thanked should the Award go to his film. Gore will be interviewed and in the next six weeks there will be parties and campaigns here in California for him to push for the awards. The Oscar nominations will be announced in the am so he should be on all of the shows touting his documentary.

I love Al but an Oscar statue is not in his future...

78. But what about $$$?
I thought that candidates are announcing earlier and earlier in large part because of the need to line up big donors early; if you wait too long, all the Democratic deep pockets have already committed to someone, and you are SOL. Isn't that what sealed the Repuke nomination for * in 2000? By the time anyone else got going, he was already so far ahead they couldn't catch up. Didn't Elizabeth Dole drop *out* of the race in, like, the summer of '99 because she concluded that she could never win the $ race?

I agree, in principle, that candidates should announce later, and that voters should decide, and not donors. It just doesn't seem like that's how it works.

Announce early, announce late, I don't care--whatever it takes to

WIN, AL, WIN!!!

103. I tend to agree. People are using the cash Hillary has stored up as another reason to prematurely
anoint her the nominee.

I think all the $$$ in the world isn't going to make her the nominee if she can't figure out how to take a morally unambiguous stand on Iraq- and frankly, I think it's too late for her to even if she wanted to try.

46. Too funny, that reminds me:
Election day 2000, I remember sitting in my car in the university parking lot and writing out a list of "promises to the Universe" that I would fulfill, if only Gore won. He did win, of course, but got cheated out of taking the job, so I didn't feel obligated to keep those promises either.

Let's give it another try, shall we?

41. I think there is certainly a group of people in and out of the media, that want to take his name off
the table...

That's why you have the report out of Japan saying he's "definitely not running"; when he said no such thing.

This Boston Globe piece is speculation; nevertheless, it indicates what many of us already know- he would make a great candidate and lots of Democrats want him to run. And if he was considering a run, he's played it perfectly so far. He would have been foolish to announce before now, that's for sure. Soon it will be crunch time, and we'll see if it happens.

48. have to admit that I fall into that catagory as well...
I know better (given hisown statements) but want him to run so very much... But am starting to "hear" what he is saying (not running...) This far out I have (in passed elections) tried to stay out of rooting for one person - as so much can change in such a long (political season) time. But this time around I have to admit that my wish to fight for Gore as president supercedes my general approach to primaries. However, it seems that Gore himself, will keep me in line with my approach to primaries (by staying out of the running.)

He jumped in and personally got involved in saving people. He did the right thing instinctually, without regard for "implications"

70. Two problems with that:
1) He won't get an Oscar. He may be on stage with the producers (who will get the awards), but he won't be getting a statue.

2) Al Gore has too much respect for Laurie David, Lawrence Bender and the other producers to overshadow their night.

Nice dream, though.

76. Mr. Gore would not be receiving the Oscar
It is the movie and the producers that would be up for any Oscar, and the producers who would go up on stage to accept it. Also, Mr. Gore isn't tackly nor is he that selfish to do something like that, and he would never use this crisis as a cover for political ambitions.

95. All true.
Can you imagine Al practically knocking over an Ex-Pres to get through a door first like Little Lord Pissypants (behavior one would expect from a child) did at the Clinton Library dedication? ABSOLUTELY NO!

We need a statesman. We need Al. I hope he throws in...

68. It's gotta be Gore !!
I see everything that is going on right now as creating a "Perfect Storm" for Al Gore.

Hillary has been forced to show her hand a full 12 months before the start of the primaries!!

This means people have a full 12 months to ask Hillary about her position on Iraq, and why has she been so supportive of the illegitimate (p)Resident of the Whitehouse these past 5 years ....

People also have time to get tired of Hillary's campaign. What we might call "Hillary fatigue".

The field is getting very crowded and it will be tough for candidates to gain traction.

I like and respect both Obama and (especially) Edwards. But the fact is they are both relatively inexperienced and unqualified if you compare them to Al Gore. Obama has been 2 years in the Senate and Edwards was 6 years (but the last 2 of those he was concentrating on the 2004 campaign).

I respect the fact that Edwards has come clean about the situation in Iraq, and has admitted he was wrong to vote for the IWR. But I respect much MORE the fact that Gore spoke out agains the Bu$h-Cheney-Rumsfeld policy on Iraq from the beginning - in speeches going back to 2002 - insisting on giving the UN inspectors more time to carry out their mission and maintaining a broad international consensus.

There is no hurry for Gore to enter the race for 2008. He is doing a great job raising public awareness about the climate crisis (speaking to more than 12000 people in Boise today!). He is also busy working on his next book "The Assault on Reason" - to be published in May (see article below).

Depending on how things pan out, and the reaction to his forthcoming book, Gore can consider his situation over the summer and announce his decision sometime in the fall.

Unless and until Gore endorses another candidate, we have to assume that he is keeping his options open. So it is too soon for those of us who prefer Gore to switch our allegiance.

The Washington Post -- Sunday, September 17, 2006

Gore's 2008 Plans May Become Clearer After Release of Book

By John F. Harris and Shailagh Murray

Although saying he has no plans to run for president in 2008, former vice president Al Gore has nonetheless left the door ever so slightly ajar. It's a good bet that door will swing open a good bit wider come next May.

That is when Gore is scheduled to publish his next book. With no fanfare, he signed a few weeks ago with Penguin Press to write "The Assault on Reason."

As described by editor Scott Moyers, the book is a meditation on how "the public arena has grown more hostile to reason," and how solving problems such as global warming is impeded by a political culture with a pervasive "unwillingness to let facts drive decisions."

While that may sound abstract, both the subject matter and the timing of the release have an unmistakable subtext. In 2004, Gore cheered liberals when he lashed at President Bush for allegedly falling captive to right-wing special interests and taking flight from "fact-based analysis." If the book strikes a chord, it will produce new momentum for Gore to make another bid for the White House, presumably fueled in large part by anti-Iraq-war Democrats.

81. great news if it happens - The Clash of the Titans
We can label the primary showdowns between Gore, Clinton, Obama, Richardson, Biden and others as "The Clash of the Titans."

What can we call the Republics? (Remember, in 1991 when Bush Sr was at 90% popularity, they called the Democrats "the Seven Dwarfs")
Maybe, 'The Clash of the Smurfs'

I think he's much more effective on the global warming issue; and this election would turn into the DLC fighting itself rather than a broad spectrum of views debating in front of the public
