Despite hard times, Florida Republicans are holding a retreat at a fantastically expensive beach front resort. It's costing the party about $400,000. So far, they manage to gut an ethics rule and senators with political committees can receive unlimited contributions from lobbyists, so next year they'll be able to afford a million dollar affair.

Florida Democrats held their retreat in a room at the FEA building and spent about $5,000.

You may want to click on the link; it's a pretty short article.

1. I worked for the State of FL
When I worked as an engineer for the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, they always had annual workshops and conferences at resort hotels on the coast. While they got discounts for reserving large blocks of rooms, I still thought it was a total waste of tax $$ in a time of web conferencing. Everything that happened could have taken place at each individual conference room in the District offices, but instead they chose to make "mini vacations" out of them. Many people would bring their families and stay a few extra days over the weekend. Half the people would go, but not show up for any workshops. They would be out partying somewhere all day. This stuff wasn't paid for by lobbyists, it was our tax $$.
