Wingnuts are out in full force to attack Janet Reno..for Ruby Ridge
On quite a few MSM sites (and HuffPo) they've posted the story of reno defending Obama's AG pick.

Wingnut commenters are spamming the sites, screaming that "she has no ethics" and they offer Ruby Ridge as an example.

There's one problem with that:
Wikipedia:
"Ruby Ridge was the site of a violent confrontation and siege in the American state of Idaho in 1992, involving Randy Weaver, his family, Weaver's friend Kevin Harris, federal agents from the United States Marshals Service and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The incident was cited as a motivation for the Oklahoma City bombing."

And

Wikipedia again:
Janet Reno (born July 21, 1938) was the Attorney General of the United States (1993–2001). She was nominated by President Bill Clinton on February 11, 1993, and confirmed on March 11. She was the first female Attorney General and the second longest serving Attorney General after William Wirt.""

and let's throw in these two:
"George Herbert Walker Bush (born June 12, 1924) served as the forty-first President of the United States from 1989 to 1993."

William Pelham Barr (born May 23, 1950 in New York City) is an American attorney who served as the 77th Attorney General of the United States.
(...)
He was appointed Attorney General by President George H. W. Bush in 1991.

It never fails to amaze me how often, upon browsing rightwing nut sites, that the black helicopters crowd so frequently lays Ruby Ridge at Clinotn and Reno's feet, despite the fact that it occured during the first Bush presidency.

9. And wingnuts refuse to ever mention the MOVE house in Philly. It's one of the clearest
examples of heavy handed militaristic government in recent history, and not a word about that, ever.

My guess is it's because they were black.

6. Former Oklahoma Senator Don Nickels
(Who made Inhofe look like a genius) once blamed Ruby Ridge on Clinton. I wrote a snarky letter to the editor of the Tulsa World mockingly correcting him and for some reason got a "care package" from a white supremacist group based in a small town northeast of Tulsa. It consisted of their quarterly newsletter (with a couple of "insults" directed at me written in the margins like, "I bet you like Hillary"), a flier telling me the number one endangered species in the world was the white woman, etc.

Fortunately, I had done a research project on white supremacist groups in high school (recognized Tom Metzger's name in the newsletter staff listings) and remembered that their particular group was mainly filled with Bubbas who like to go out into the woods and shoot beer cans while fantasizing about an upcoming race war that they can jump in on the tail end of (after the whites supposedly start winning) so they don't put themselves into too much danger.

I told a college friend who was living in Chicago about it, and he mentioned his senior research project was also on white supremacist groups and that Metzger had visited Chi-town recently to talk at a group's picnic, and he had gone and sat across the street on a park bench to watch and listen. After the speechifying was done, he said they started the picnic, and the beer of choice was Corona. He appreciated the irony.

8. They are revitalizing the militia / survivalist movements.
Edited on Thu Nov-20-08 05:30 AM by TWiley
The wrong version of history is much touted in the militia - fundamentalist christian circles. They are the only group(s) that really keep the false story alive. Remember that Timothy McVeigh was one of their "believers" Nazi-apologist Pat Buchanan and his former co-chair of the reform party Larry Pratt figure into this story as well. McVeigh was reported to be at a rally at Waco while that drama unfolded, and attended a "Christian Identity" (google that otherwise you will NEVER know what it really means) speech given by Larry Pratt. If my feeble memory serves me correctly, then this speech was actually given at waco during the "siege". The same republican base that brought you Oklahoma City seems to be inflaming the same group of simple-minded and easy-to-lead paranoid superstitious-religious schizophrenics into another bombing or anthrax type attack. This is my instinct, or my fear, I should say. Truth be known, the average domestic US citizen is thousands of times more lilely to be the victim of a domestic terrorist group as opposed to a foreign based one.

Soon, they will be terrified of the United Nations once again, and search the Sky's for another comet to worship.

Edit: Sarah Palin campaigned for presidental hopeful Buchanan, and Buchanan responded by calling Palin "One of Us". Palin is the most recent sweetheart of the militia movement; her moose hunting NRA credintals combined with a loose connection to Buchanan and the successionist movement AIP make this "babe" irresistable to the religious-survivalist crowd. I absolutely believe that she was picked to energize the republicans radical base. Remember, Buchanan and Pratt framed gun ownership on biblical principles, and even framed the militia movements to be the bullwark against anti-christian government.
