Either one of them should be considered before Clinton on experience alone. Flame proof suit on.

he'd chair the SFRC. Tough choice.

6. Richardson went out on a limb for Obama.
He's extremely well qualified, was instrumental in bringing out the Latino vote and supported Obama much to the Clinton's chagrin.
I hope Obama finds a position for him if not as SOS. Kerry on the other hand has always left me lukewarm.

15. "went out on a limb for Obama"
I REALLY wish appointments were decided on the basis of who is most qualified and would do the best job, not who is owed the most favors.

Instrumental in delivering Latino votes is not a qualification for SOS. Other things in his background are relevant, but this - this is not.

16. I have no problem with rewarding loyalty as long as it's competent
But you're right it isn't a criteria that should be considered over raw ability. We've already had 8 years of that.

24. What I've figured out
is that you are arguing some strawman you decided to bring to the table.

What I said was that favors shouldn't be a consideration.

You seem to want to argue that they HAVE been a consideration in some appointments. Nobody is denying that - you are arguing with yourself on that point.

28. I'm not interested in arguing at all. Simply making the point that
while appointing the person with the best qualifications is paramount,
it's equally important to surround himself with those that he may have
built relationships of trust and and confidence. That was the "leap" I
attempted to make. You interpreted my comment to mean mere favors,

31. I was responding to a post
that phrased it in terms of "rewards" for loyalty. So yeah, that implies favors and payoffs. I've seen a number of posts on DU that refers to what people are "owed."

Some of us call that cronyism.

One is a decision, one is an obligation. Thin line? Sure. What line isn't blurry in Washington?

23. Richardson went out on a limb, but Kerry didn't? Who invited Obama
to give that extraordinary speech at the DNC in 2004 where he was introduced to the world? Who supported Obama from the get-go and stumped for him tirelessly? Who went on MTP as a surrogate the Sunday prior to the election?

27. Kerry went out on a limb for Obama.
He was running for reelection in heavily pro-Clinton Massachusetts. Not that he was in danger of losing his seat, but he took a lot of heat for his early endorsement and his primary and GE opponents both slammed him incessantly for stumping for Obama across the country rather than being in MA for his own reelection campaign.

That said, Richardson is my second choice for SoS. I think he'd do a fine job.

because I want to see John Kerry's smarts and experience stay in the Senate, where he can help advance Obama's agenda. Besides, Richardson has a ton of relevant experience and a proven record as a team player.

37. I'm not really sure what wanting it has to do with picking the best SOS
Personally, I would want: 1. Kerry, 2. Clinton, and 3. Richardson. But I wouldn't be upset over any of these people being SOS since I feel they're all qualified.
