16 year old sailing around the world
This is so neat, I had to share it.

Mike Perham, 16, is going to sail around the world - he sets off today!

There is a link (World Challenge) that takes you to a blog.

2. Perhaps inspired by this guy...
Robin Lee Graham

Robin Lee Graham (1949 - ) set out to sail around the world alone as a teenager in the summer of 1965. National Geographic Magazine carried the story, and he co-wrote a book detailing his journey titled, Dove.
Graham was just sixteen when he set out alone from Southern California and headed west in his 24-foot sloop. He picked up two kittens called Joliette and Susette for company (Robin Lee Graham, National Geographic Mag. 1968). He married along the way, and after almost five years, sailed back into his home port in Los Angeles. After he and his wife, Patti Ratterree, briefly attended Stanford University, they moved to Montana and settled down.

A 24 foot sloop seems rather small for ocean voyaging - and Mr. Graham's circumnavigation was done in the days before navigation aids such as GPS. Amazing!

3. I thought about that too!
Wasn't that amazing? The book "Dove" has always been one of my sister's favorites. Wonder what ever happened to that guy?

5. Found some info along with recent pics here...
What happened to Robin Lee Graham?

From Amazon:
Some web sites on the internet have provided incorrect information about Patti and Robin Lee Graham who documented his circumnavigation at age 16 (1965-1970) in his book "Dove," as well as in three National Geographic issues, and a movie by Gregory Peck. Patti and Robin still live in Montana (documented in his second book, "Home is the Sailor") and are grandparents of two grand sons of Quimby and her husband. Their son Benjamin is recently married. The Grahams are in the construction business and continue to serve as a positive influence in the lives of young people through their writings and religious service to others. They are remarkable people and provide us all a remarkable story of courage, perseverance, hope and friendship.

So there you are: they're well and Jesus freaks.

4. When I was sixteen...
I went on tour with the Grateful Dead.

It was much more enlightning than sailing in a boat... alone... for months.

8. No reason to go near pirate waters
SOuthern Carribean, Brazil, SOmalia...INdonesia...

He will spending most of his time in the remote open southern ocean where his Open 50 shines.

18-20 knots surfing down 20-30 seas...pirates go after remote costal cruising vessels...not adventure sailors.

Guy from MIlwaukee tried to do similar and ended up upside down after he lost his keel on the open 50 he was sailing.

Almost died.
