U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) said today that his daughter's death the weekend before the election served as a reminder that family is more important than politics.
Illinois' senior senator lost his 40-year-old daughter, Christine, due to complications from a congenital heart ailment, ending the senator's successful re-election campaign on a somber note.
Durbin, who holds the second-ranking spot in the Senate, briefly addressed reporters about his daughter's passing as well as the death of Barack Obama's grandmother, the woman who played a significant role in his upbringing, on the eve of Obama's historic presidential victory.
"It's a reminder that politics has its limits," Durbin said somberly. "Life goes on, life and death, and … your family is the most important thing."
His remarks came after Durbin addressed veterans at rain-soaked Camp Butler National Cemetery outside of Springfield.
