Juan Cole: Palin Attacks Provoked Assassination Plots on Obamas
Palin Attacks Provoked Assassination Plots on Obamas
Juan Cole

Unnamed Secret Service field officers have revealed to the press that Sarah Palin's attacks on President-Elect Obama provoked numerous white supremecist assassination plots against him:

"'The Republican vice presidential candidate attracted criticism for accusing Mr Obama of "palling around with terrorists", citing his association with the sixties radical William Ayers.

"The attacks provoked a near lynch mob atmosphere at her rallies, with supporters yelling "terrorist" and "kill him" until the McCain campaign ordered her to tone down the rhetoric.

"But it has now emerged that her demagogic tone may have unintentionally encouraged white supremacists to go even further.

"The Secret Service warned the Obama family in mid October that they had seen a dramatic increase in the number of threats against the Democratic candidate, coinciding with Mrs Palin's attacks.' "

<snip>

McCain and Palin knew exactly what they were unleashing with that line, as did Neocon Randy Scheunemann.

1. The level of racism during this election has made me ill
and cost me what I had previously thought of as a 'friend'. My husband and I were discussing this morning how we had managed to raise three 'color blind' and tolerant children while my friend's sons were 'in tears' at the Obama victory.

Why in the name of all that is good and Holy would you fill a child's mind with that garbage?

My parents always told us that skin color was a 'philosophical accident', like the color of one's eyes.

It is very sad that people still feel that way.

3. "May have unintentionally encouraged white supremacists"
I suppose that's possible for a dimwit who doesn't even realize that Africa is a continent, but after watching Sarah Palin's ideological soulmates in action for the last 10 years, I have gotten cynical. Palin knew precisely what she was doing, did it deliberately, and baited the latent racism she knew her audience harbored to make it manifest.

Will Sarah Palin take a pot shot at Barack Obama? I think not. But did she load a gun and hand it over to the less stable elements of her coterie, counting on nature to take its course. She heard the shouts from the crowd and merely smiled. If she didn't hear the shouts in real time, she surely heard them afterwards. And didn't do a thing about it in subsequent appearances.
